Robert Saleh on training camp fights: ‘One rule, no punching’

Everyone loves a good, old-fashioned brawl during training camp. And everyone knows they are bound to happen. The days are long and hot and you’re beating up on your own teammates — and thus, the same people — for weeks on end. Eventually, emotions boil over and fights will happen. Especially if your name is Trevor Penning.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh has no problem with those inevitable training camp fights. He just has one simple rule regarding those fights that he shared with the media after practice Friday, yet another day with a fight. A pair of them, at that.

“One rule, no punching.”

Plain and simple. Don’t throw any punches. As Saleh noted, that’s a 15-yard penalty and you’re ejected from the game.

“They’re going to push, they’re going to shove, it’s going to happen,” Saleh said. “They’re sick of each other. I’m sick of hearing the same calls from the coordinators and I think everyone is sick of each other at this point in camp. We have one more week before we get to go to Philadelphia and see different humans. Rule 1 — Protect the team, don’t punch. It’s a 15-yard penalty and you get ejected from the game.”

Friday’s scuffles involved fullback Nick Bawden and linebacker Kwon Alexander and another saw offensive tackle Grant Hermanns and defensive lineman Bradlee Anae also go at it.

Training camp scuffles are going to happen. Just as long as they don’t blow up into something bigger, everyone moves on with their lives.
