RMAC suspends coach Travis Brewster after 'voluntarily' forfeiting game

Jan. 25—CHADRON, Neb. — The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has suspended Chadron State women's basketball coach Travis Brewster for three games and fined the school $5,000 for "voluntarily leaving the playing facility" during a game Saturday.

Brewster, the former UND women's basketball coach, pulled his team off the court with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter in a game against Adams State in Alamosa, Colo.

Adams State was leading 63-22.

Brewster cited "player safety," for leaving the playing surface.

The RMAC described it as a voluntary action.

"The choice by the Chadron State women's basketball team to voluntarily forfeit the contest was unacceptable and contrary to the RMAC Philosophy Statement, Ethical Conduct Policy and spirit of the game," the RMAC said in a statement. "The decision was also wholly unfair to participating student-athletes."

Per the NCAA rulebook — Rule 5, Section 3, Article 5 — the game was declared a forfeit and a 2-0 victory for Adams State. All of the players' statistics were wiped out.

In a statement, Chadron State said: "Chadron State College accepts the RMAC's decision and will continue to fully cooperate with RMAC officials."

Brewster is in his first year as head coach at Chadron State. He spent the previous two seasons with Saint Xavier University, an NAIA school in Chicago. In 2020-21, he was an assistant at Idaho State.

Brewster spent just under 20 years in Grand Forks.

He first served as an assistant coach under Gene Roebuck from 2001-06. After spending a year at South Dakota State and another season at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he returned to Grand Forks to be an assistant from 2008-12.

Brewster took over the women's basketball program after Roebuck retired.

Chadron State is 5-10 this season.
