Rick Barnes given technical foul in Tennessee basketball vs Purdue

Rick Barnes got a technical foul in Tennessee basketball's game against Purdue on Tuesday.

The Vols coach was irate after a foul call on Tennessee after Purdue center Zach Edey appeared to shove Josiah-Jordan James while battling for a rebound. Barnes' technical came at the 5:15 mark of the first half.

"When I got the technical foul, I know I was right on that call," Barnes said to ESPN at halftime. "We got pushed.”

Purdue's Fletcher Loyer made both free throws from the technical and then made two free throws from the personal foul, which was called on UT guard Jordan Gainey. Loyer's four free throws trimmed UT's lead to 24-23.

“It is a physical game, I just don’t think the officials realize it," Barnes said.

It was Barnes' first technical since Jan. 2, 2021, against Alabama. It was Tennessee's first technical since Uros Plavsic against Florida Atlantic in the Sweet 16 in March 2023.
