The Rewind: South girls and Dimond boys claim regional swimming titles, UAA hockey upsets No. 15 ranked Penn State

Oct. 30—Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska's world of sports.

The first weekend of the 2023 Alaska high school swimming postseason saw a repeat champion and new one crowned in town. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team split two road conference matches and the UAA hockey team split a two-game road series with a nationally ranked opponent. On the national stage, several Alaska-born athletes had impressive showings in their respective sports and levels of competition.

Headlines and highlights

The 2023 Alaska high school swimming and diving postseason got underway this past weekend and for the second year in a row, the South Anchorage girls relied on their tremendous depth to edge out the defending state champion Dimond for the Region IV championship title. The Wolverines had four first place finishers including their 200-yard medley relay team that beat the reigning state champion team from the Lynx.

"That's been our strength all along and I'm super proud of all of the girls," South coach Kenny Fox said. "Every one of them stepped up in their own way, and I couldn't be more proud of them. It wasn't just one swimmer, it was all of them together."

On the boys side, reigning state champion Service wasn't able to successfully defend its regional title and was narrowly beaten by the Lynx 423-420. Nevertheless, the Cougars had several individual champions crowned including Preston Kwon and Ben Price twice. With his blazing finish if 55:11 seconds in the boys 100-yard breaststroke, Kwon set a new meet and state record for the event as well as qualified for nationals.

"Coming into this season, I had a low of 56 (seconds) so it just took putting in a little bit more work and I'm really happy with the swims," he said. "Once I saw 55:11, it was like a dream come true. The goal was to go under 55 (seconds)."

The 2023 high school hockey season got started up this past week and saw all three of the reigning state championship teams open on a high note. The defending girls champion Dimond/West shutout the Mat-Su Valley Ravens 6-0 on Friday, defending Division I boys champion Chugiak beat Bartlett/East 6-1 on Saturday, and defending Division II boys champion Soldotna won both of its games by shutting out Service 3-0 on Thursday and beating Houston 6-3 on Friday.

On the college scene, the UAA volleyball team spilt its two road games this past week against Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents to improve to 13-15 on the season and 5-8 in the conference. On Thursday night, the Seawolves fell in four sets to Seattle Pacific University but were able to bounce back two days later by sweeping Montana State Billings on Saturday. The Seawolves were led in kills this past week by senior outside hitter Nicole Blue who eclipsed double-figures in both matches and racked up 26 combined between the two contests.

The UAA men's hockey team notched its biggest win of the season thus far when the Seawolves won the second contest in a two-game series with nationally ranked Penn State University. After narrowly dropping the first game 2-1 on Thursday, the Seawolves rebounded the next night with 6-5 win over the No. 15 ranked Nittany Lions on Friday. They used an explosive opening period that featured a pair of goals from graduate student forward Adam Tisdale to build an early 4-2 lead. After Penn State tied the game at 4-4 in the second, UAA's Connor Marritt and Aiden Westin made sure the Seawolves stayed ahead for good with a clutch goals of their own.

The Anchorage Wolverines won two contests in their three-game series with the Wisconsin Windigo over the weekend, emerging victorious in the first two on Friday and Saturday before dropping the third on Sunday. They had to dig themselves out of a early hole in their second game after falling behind 4-1 following the first period but go onto outscore their foes 5-0 over the final two periods and forward Kade Shea completed the rally with his second goal of the weekend in the third period.
