Shaquille O’Neal, Alex Rodriguez invest in NRG Esports

Three big names in professional sports have invested in NRG Esports, The Daily Dot reported Thursday. Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, three-time MLB American League MVP Alex Rodriguez, and MLB shortstop Jimmy Rollins have placed investments into the team.

Shaq has confirmed the deal via Twitter.

NRG Esports owns teams in League of Legends and Counter-Strike.

This is not the first time that a current or former professional athlete has taken interest in an esports team. Former Los Angeles Laker Rick Fox purchased Team Gravity’s North American LCS slot, rebranding the squad to Echo Fox.

It is unclear as to what the former athletes’ role will be within the NRG organization, or exactly how much they have invested.
