Report: Raiders CB Conley (hip) out few weeks

Oakland Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley is expected to miss "a couple of weeks" with a hip injury, according to an NFL Network report Monday.

Conley, who sustained a groin injury at the end of minicamp in June, has missed the past few practices after injuring his hip early in camp.

"I don't know if concerned is the word," head coach Jon Gruden told reporters when asked about Conley. "I think disappointed is the word. He comes out and starts training camp, he's in superb shape, he makes a great play and he gets a setback. Hopefully he comes back sooner than later."

Conley, 23, missed all but one preseason game and two regular-season games as a rookie in 2017 while battling a shin injury that ultimately required surgery. He finished with seven tackles and one pass breakup in 92 defensive snaps.

Oakland's first preseason game is Aug. 10, at home against the Detroit Lions.

The team's 2017 first-round pick, Conley has drawn praise for his offseason work from teammates and Gruden.

"Man is he a good player," Gruden said of Conley in June. "When he's feeling good, you can see why we picked him No. 1."

Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther told reporters on Sunday that the team's cornerback depth chart is "wide open" after the departures of David Amerson, Sean Smith and T.J. Carrie, the arrivals of free agents Rashaan Melvin, Leon Hall, Daryl Worley and Shareece Wright, plus draft pick Nick Nelson.

"It's going to be (exciting) to see who comes to the top of that battle," Guenther said.

Melvin, who signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal, has worked routinely with the starters during camp. Worley -- who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles following an April arrest, one month after they traded for him -- has filled in as a starter in Conley's absence.
