Phillies OF Rhys Hoskins has broken jaw after fouling fastball into his own face

Rhys Hoskins did more than bloody his lip.

The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder fouled off a Kenley Jansen fastball that ricocheted off his bat and into his own face in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

He spent several moments on the ground and spit blood onto the dirt before leaving the game. After the game, the report was that he suffered a busted lip.

Further testing Wednesday revealed more significant damage. Manager Gabe Kapler told reporters before Wednesday’s game that Hoskins is “likely” headed to the disabled list after a CAT scan revealed a fracture in his jaw.

“He is likely to go on the disabled list,” Gabe Kapler said. “We’re going to send him to Philly tonight to be evaluated by our oral surgeon. The DL is likely, but we could get info from the specialist that leads us in a different direction, so I just want to be open with that.”

The fracture may require surgery or could be simply treated with rest depending on what the evaluation shows, Kapler said.

Hoskins doubled and scored a run in a pitch-hit appearance with that broken jaw on Tuesday.

He told reporters Wednesday that pain from the fracture was minimal, which partly explains why the injury wasn’t initially diagnosed properly.

Obviously, it makes it a little bit tougher knowing that I can play with little to no pain,” he said. “But you have to put your health first at some point. It’s just an unfortunate situation.”

It sounds like he’s lucky no further damage was done.
