Matt Nagy believes the Bears have the ‘right guy’ in Justin Fields

Former Bears head coach Matt Nagy didn’t leave Chicago on the best terms. Fans had been calling for his job after the team’s repeated struggles and his handling of rookie quarterback Justin Fields.

But there are no hard feelings from Nagy, who’s back as the Chiefs offensive coordinator with mentor Andy Reid in Kansas City. In fact, Nagy remains a staunch supporter of Fields, who’s emerged as one of the league’s most exciting playmakers despite a lack of a supporting cast and poor pass protection.

Good Morning Football‘s Kyle Brandt recently shared a text exchange he had with Nagy after he was fired by Chicago. Brandt said Nagy believes the Bears have the “right guy” in Fields to lead them to a championship.

“I had a text exchange with Matt Nagy,” Brandt said. “I think he’d be comfortable with me revealing what were talking about, the nature of him being let go. He said, ‘I’ll tell you this. They have the right guy in Justin. Justin is the answer. Justin will bring them to the promised land. Justin is the truth.’

“And he could have easily off the record had said, ‘I don’t know about Fields.’ He loves him. And this is a coach who was just terminated by the team saying ‘They have the right guy.'”

Expectations are high for Fields, who’s entering a pivotal season where he needs to improve as a passer. General manager Ryan Poles has made it a priority to build around Fields, which includes an improved wide receiver group and offensive line. Now, Fields has to prove he’s the guy, especially after the team opted to stick with him rather than draft a quarterback at first overall.

The Bears will travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in Week 3, when Nagy will face his former team for the first time since he was fired following the 2021 season.
