Report: Lakers to interview J.B. Bickerstaff for head coaching position

A new candidate has emerged for the Los Angeles Lakers’ vacant head coach position. Former Memphis Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff will reportedly interview with the Lakers for the job, according to Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.

The 40-year-old Bickerstaff is a long-time assistant who has had two brief head coaching opportunities in the past. He was named the interim head coach of the Houston Rockets during the 2015-16 season. After going 37-34, Bickerstaff withdrew his name from consideration for the full-time role.

He joined the Grizzlies as an associate head coach initially, but once again was elevated to an interim head coaching role with the team. After compiling a 48-97 record with the team, Bickerstaff was fired.

Tyronn Lue was considered a heavy favorite to get the Lakers position, but the team failed to offer Lue an acceptable deal. Lue has reportedly pulled out of negotiations, leaving the Lakers scrambling to find new candidates.

It didn’t take long for the time to find other coaches they liked. Along with Bickerstaff, the team is expected to also interview Lionel Hollins, Frank Vogel and Mike Woodson.
