Report: Jadeveon Clowney leaves Jaguars visit sans contract; team makes other roster moves

Free agent defensive lineman Jedeveon Clowney paid a visit to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, according to multiple reports. Clowney left his visit without a contract, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Clowney, 30, was the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. In nine years, Clowney has played in 109 games, including 98 starts. He has accounted for 320 total tackles, 90 tackles for loss and 43 sacks. Clowney has played for four different teams, including the Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and most recently the Cleveland Browns.

Over the last two seasons with Cleveland, Clowney played in 26 games, amassing 65 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. Clowney's best season came in 2017 when he collected 9.5 sacks.

The Jaguars appear to be doing their due diligence on one of the most polarizing pass rushers of the past decade. Clowney has showcased signs of dominance but hasn't proven to be consistent through the course of his career.

Jacksonville has avoided adding a pass rusher beyond fifth-round rookie Yasir Abdullah thus far this year. The team lost DL Arden Key to the Tennessee Titans and brought back DL Dawuane Smoot, but he remains on the team's active/Physically Unable to Perform list and is likely to remain there as the regular season begins. Smoot would have to miss the first four games of the regular season if he remains on the PUP list after the cut-down day on Aug. 29.

The Jaguars have remained steadfast in their belief that the team's front-line pass rushers, Josh Allen and Travon Walker, are expected to take major jumps in production from last season. Last year, the two combined for 10.5 sacks, including 7 coming from Allen, 3.5 from Walker, the team's first-overall pick in 2022.

The Jaguars made other moves Sunday aside from hosting Clowney on a visit. The team announced that Chilean-born tight end Sammis Reyes was placed on the team's reserve/retired list. Reyes had been in the team's concussion protocol. He has yet to announce his retirement from the NFL publicaly.

In a corresponding move, the Jaguars signed offensive lineman Bobby Evans, who last played for the Minnesota Vikings. He was released by the team Aug. 3. Evans was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played in 35 games, starting 12 in four years with the club.

Evans brings versatility, having played both guard and tackle throughout his NFL career. At Oklahoma, Evans played both right and left tackle.
