Report: Bengals' Joe Mixon needs arthroscopic surgery on knee

Second-year running back Joe Mixon began this season as the Cincinnati Bengals’ starter, and has been off to a solid start in the team’s wins over Indianapolis and Baltimore.

But against the Ravens on Thursday night, Mixon wasn’t able to play the full game due to a knee injury, and that injury may have him sidelined for a bit.

Surgery needed

Citing a source, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday afternoon that Mixon had “a small particle in his knee that dislodged Thursday night” and that he’d be undergoing a procedure on Saturday to remove it.

Schefter further wrote that Mixon is expected to be out for two weeks.

Not long before Schefter’s report, however, NFL Network reported that Cincinnati feared Mixon needed arthroscopic surgery, but that he would get a second opinion before a decision was made.

‘Some weird tweak’

On Friday, Mixon described his injury as “some weird tweak,” and while he wasn’t pulled from the game, he played in 51 percent of the snaps (39-of-76); last Sunday against the Colts, Mixon played in nearly 80 percent of the offensive snaps (44-of-56).

Mixon had 149 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown against Indianapolis, with 17 carries for 95 yards and five catches for 54 yards. Against Baltimore, he still got 21 carries for 84 yards, with one catch.

As a rookie last year – he was chosen 84th overall, out of Oklahoma – Mixon got 178 carries but averaged just 3.5 yards per. He totaled 913 yards from scrimmage.
