Regional soccer: Chiles boys soccer top Fleming Island in penalty shootout, Chiles, Lincoln girls cruise to quarterfinal wins

The average human heart rate sits between 60 to 100 beats per minute.

During Tuesday night's 6A Regional quarterfinal, Chiles (13-4-1) boys soccer coach Bryan McDonald's heart rate was well over 100 as his Timberwolves beat Fleming Island 2 (5) - 2 (4) in a penalty shootout to advance to the 6A regional semifinals.

"This region is a battle with the teams we play," McDonald said. "We had a tough schedule this year because I wanted to test us and see where we are character wise and they've risen to the occasion over and over and over again. They find ways to prove who they are and show the ability to win games."

While Mcdonald's heart rate eventually began to come down, sitting at 104 postgame, it took a lot for the Timberwolves to get to that point.

Senior Caleb Gaines opened the scoring nearly an hour into the game, instinctively stabbing the ball out of midair and sending the ball into the top corner.

"That's what it takes. You got to take every chance that you get you can't let one just pass by and then be like 'Oh shoot, I didn't take that chance," Gaines said on his goal.

Fleming Island eventually responded with a goal of its own and late in the second half, scoring a free kick to force extra time.

Senior Arman Atayants put Chiles ahead in extra time after going on a slaloming run through the Golden Eagles' defense and firing his strike into the roof of the net. The joy was short-lived, however, as again Fleming Island leveled the score, with Taylor Suarez's first-time volley sending the game to penalty kicks.

In the shootout, Chiles goalkeeper Trenten Harrison knew he only needed one stop to give the Timberwolves a chance.

On the second kick of the shootout, he got what he wanted, saving the Fleming Island penalty.

"Going into it I was just thinking that my team's done so much work to get us here, I have to cross the finish line," Harrison said. "I was just ecstatic to finally make that save and give us a buffer to keep going and give us the window to go to play another team."

The win over the Golden Eagles means Chiles will host its regional semifinal match after No. 2 Gulf Breeze lost to No. 7 Nease. Undefeated on home turf, winning seven and drawing one game, the opportunity to play at home one more time added extra confidence to the Timberwolves squad following the shootout.

"It's definitely a fortress for us," Gaines said. "You could tell our team was ecstatic that we get to play at home one more time."

"Senior year, one last game at your home field there's nothing better," Harrison added. "We've got our fans behind us."

No. 2 Chiles will host No. 7 Nease in the 6A regional semifinals on Friday, Feb. 16, at Chiles High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Chiles girls soccer dazzle in 5-goal display against Pace

For the second time this season, the Timberwolves have beaten Pace 5-1.

Hosting the Patriots in the 6A Regional quarterfinal on Tuesday night, Chiles (12-4-3) put together one of the team's best performances of the season to secure a spot in the 6A regional semifinal against No. 1 Ponte Vedra.

"This is the best I've seen them play together since the beginning of the season," Chiles head coach Christopher Bulu said. "That's a really big deal."

Maintaining control of the game for nearly the full 80 minutes of play, the Timberwolves had four different goal scorers Tuesday night.

Kyra Swart scored twice, including a curling goal that flew into the top right corner to open the scoring. Cadence West, Reagan Wolfe and Charlotte Reynolds all scored one each to cap off a complete offensive display.

The duo of Swart and West was a big part of the Timberwolves' victory, with both players playing on the wing creating chances and causing problems for the Pace defense.

"Kyra is probably my favorite duo on the wing," West said. "We kill it. We are both very aggressive and speedy and we always look for each other all the time."

Tuesday's game was the first for Chiles in just over two weeks, and the extra rest allowed the Timberwolves to gameplan more for Pace.

"I think that the week was good, now we're ready to play," West said. "We have things set now and we're solid right now. We're coming out stronger than ever and we're really close right now and understand each other on the field. It's just getting stronger and stronger."

Heading to Jacksonville to face No. 1 Ponte Vedra, the Timberwolves are heading towards it's biggest test of the season. The Sharks are ranked as the number-one team in the nation by MaxPreps and Swart knows Chiles has to play at a high level to pull off the upset on the road.

"I know Ponte Vedra because I play on a club team based in Jacksonville and I know what their team can bring," Swart said. "We have to bring our game, we have to play composed. There's always room for upsets that no one expects so we're here to bring it."

Chiles will travel to Ponte Vedra on Friday, Feb. 16, with kickoff against the Sharks scheduled for 7 p.m. in Jacksonville for the 5A regional semifinal.
