Regional roundup: Northmor's Cade Miracle vaults into state track and field championships

HEATH — Both Northmor boys pole vaulters Levi Hunter and Cade Miracle reached 12 feet, 8 inches, but only Miracle will advance to next week's state track and field championships at the University of Dayton.

Competing in the Division III regional meet at Heath on Wednesday, Miracle finished fourth and Hunter fifth. Miracle earned 12-8 on his first attempt and Hunter got it on his second try and that proved to be the difference maker. Both fouled out at 13 feet.

The top four finishers in the finals advance to state. There are two at-large berths available to the best two remaining marks from Ohio's four regional meets.

While 12-8 isn't high enough for an at-large berth, Northmor's Cowin Becker will likely gain one in the boys long jump after finishing fifth with a 21-6.75, one inch from the final automatic bid at Heath. Pleasant's Hudson Warner was ninth with a leap of 20-3.75.

Pleasant's Landon O'Donnell was 15th in the boys discus at 105 feet.

The only track finals were contested in the 4x800-meter relays. Northmor's boys were fifth at 8:12.22 and are poised for an at-large berth, while Mount Gilead was seventh at 8:16.41.

In regional track semifinals held Wednesday, the top eight will run again in Friday evening's finals.

Ridgedale's Maddie McKenzie and Pleasant's Sarah Jordan were third and eighth respectively in the girls 100 hurdles in times of 16.77 and 17.23.

Logan High was eighth in the boys 100 at 11.54 and fourth in the 200 at 23.33.

Becker was second in the boys 400 at 50.95, while Mount Gilead's Wyatt Mowry was fourth in the boys 300 hurdles at 41.66, and Northmor's Ethan Amens was tied for seventh in the same race at 42.98.

Mount Gilead has three relays moving on. The boys 4x200 was fourth in 1:31.92, the girls 4x100 fifth in 52.08 and the boys 4x400 fourth in 3:30.39.

Individuals in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs will all compete in Friday's finals.

Failing to advance to the finals were Warner in the boys 110 hurdles (10th, 16.78), Northmor in the boys 4x200 (11th, 1:36.19), Elgin in the boys 4x100 (14th, 46.71), MG's Quade Harris in the boys 400 (ninth, 52.08) and Northmor in the boys 4x400 (ninth, 3:32.07).

Heath will host the regional finals in field events Friday at 4 p.m. and starting at 5:30 p.m. for the track finals.
