Red River sits eight shots back in third place after first day of state golf

Jun. 7—FARGO — Grand Forks Red River will have to chase down a pair of Eastern Dakota Conference foes on the final day of the North Dakota Class A state meet if the Roughriders are to win a state championship.

Red River sits in third place, eight shots back of co-leaders Fargo Davies and West Fargo Sheyenne, after the first day of the state meet on Tuesday at Fargo's Rose Creek Golf Course.

Grand Forks Central sits in seventh.

Landon Olson of Fargo North and Nate Peyerl of West Fargo Sheyenne each shot 70s to pace the individual field.

Red River was led by senior Cooper Freije, who sits in fifth with a 73. Central's Brady McGarry and Red River's Skyler Syverson are in a large group tied for ninth with 75s.

The East Region held down the top four spots at the state meet with Davies, Sheyenne, Red River and North filling out the top four spots. Bismarck Century was the West Region's top finisher in fifth, 13 shots off the lead.
