Rams injury report: Matthew Stafford not practicing Wednesday, isn’t ruled out for Week 9

Matthew Stafford is dealing with a UCL sprain in his right thumb, which he suffered on Sunday afternoon against the Cowboys. While it seems unlikely he will play against the Packers this weekend, he hasn’t yet been ruled out for that game.

Sean McVay provided an update on Wednesday, saying Stafford is still considered day-to-day but he won’t practice on Wednesday. McVay isn’t ruling him out, saying the Rams can take it all the way up to game time on Sunday to determine Stafford’s status.

Even if Stafford doesn’t practice all week, he could still play against Green Bay.

“It’s one of those deals that you give him up until right before the game. You use all the time necessary for a player like him,” McVay said.

As for his current health and the swelling in his thumb, McVay didn’t provide much of an update there.

“Just taking it a day at a time,”he said. “He’s trying to take care of all those types of things. We’ll continue to monitor it and he’ll be day-to-day. Obviously, he won’t participate today and we’ll have contingency plans for both situations that could potentially arise.”

The good news is that Stafford won’t go on injured reserve, McVay said. That’s not in the cards for the Rams, so at the very least, he’s not expected to miss the four games that would be required if he were to land on IR.

With regards to the rest of the injury report, Rob Havenstein and Ernest Jones also won’t practice on Wednesday. Havenstein has a calf injury and Jones is still dealing with a knee injury that has limited him in recent weeks.

Larrell Murchison, Cobie Durant, Puka Nacua, Austin Trammell, Ben Skowronek and Ethan Evans are all limited on Wednesday as they recover from their injuries.
