Raiders DE Mack Looks to Cash In After 2017 Season

There’s no way getting around it: Khalil Mack’s impending contract extension will reset the market for pass rushers. Additionally, the Raiders defensive end, who’s the team’s best all-around defender, deserves it.

Last summer, Denver’s Von Miller set the bar with a six-year, $114.50 million pact with the Broncos. That’s an average yearly salary of $19.08 million. Spotrac.com, a website dedicated to player contracts, estimates Mack’s average salary around $20.1 million. The group projects Mack’s market value at whopping $140.71 million over seven years.

While a seven-year deal is extreme , a five- or six-year contract is more likely. Also, with $47 million in cap space projected for the 2017 campaign, expect a hefty number to fall Mack’s way. As a result, it will be no surprise to see agent Joel Segal seeking to earn as much coin he can for his client. Mack will earn $5.94 million in the fourth year of his rookie deal.

Mack not only one-upped Miller by earning one more vote (18 to 17) to win the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, the Raiders’ All-Pro defensive end is going to top his Broncos counterpart in the financial department.

Oakland Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie’s negotiating skills should be fine-tuned with the Mack deal. Why? McKenzie should’ve signed franchise quarterback Derek Carr locked into a contract extension first. Unlike with Carr, the Raiders have a little bit more time as Mack’s rookie deal (four-year, $18.67 million) comes with a fifth-year option. In essence, the Raiders could extend Mack to a one more year.

“Khalil is a rare combination because he’s a supremely gifted athlete, but he’s got terrific work ethic,” said Raiders coach Jack Del Rio. “This guy comes out and busts it every day for us. He’s a great teammate. He’s humble. He can bring it and he brings it every day.”

The Raiders are surely to bring the cash, too.
