Racing continues: William Byron headlines Governor's Cup this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway

NEW SMYRNA BEACH — The NASCAR season may have ended this past weekend, but the stock-car laps turn year-round, with this weekend bringing one of the staples of Florida’s race year.

Sunday’s 58th annual Governor’s Cup concludes a weekend of racing at the half-mile New Smyrna Speedway, with NASCAR’s winningest 2023 driver, William Byron, headlining the field.

New Smyrna Speedway's corners are banked at 18-20 degrees, allowing for fast action.

Byron, a six-time winner and one of this year's four Cup Series championship finalists, has several New Smyrna wins — including this past February’s Clyde Hart Memorial during the World Series of Asphalt Racing. He's one of two dozen entries in Sunday’s Super Late Model main event.

On-track action begins Friday afternoon at 3 with alternating practice sessions for all weekend divisions, including trucks, vintage cars, late models and bombers. Saturday’s schedule includes practice and qualifying throughout the day and several feature races beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday's main events in all categories begin at 2 p.m.

With no past winners on the entry list, this year’s Governor’s Cup will produce a first-time champ.

Festivities preceding the historic short-track race have often included sitting governors. With Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on the presidential campaign trail, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody will serve as Grand Marshall.
