Quintet of local wrestlers win on day one of state championships

Feb. 23—The New York State Wrestling Championships began Friday at MVP Arena in Albany with several local matmen advancing to Saturday's rounds.

Unatego/Unadilla Valley saw a pair of wrestlers advance, with Caleb Cole winning via pin at 116 pounds over Aiden Lee of John Glenn and Abdul-Jamil Zaggout winning by decision at 131 over Camden's Kolton Kelley.

Also moving on from the local ranks: Sidney's Caden Higley pinned Sleepy Hollow's at 101 pounds, Darren Florance of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville pinned Jesse Straus of Pleasantville at 116 and TJ O'Connor of Cooperstown/Milford won by decision over Palmyra Macedon's Keegin Christian at 152.

Oneonta's Jayden Zakala fell by pin at 215 pounds to Bolivar Richburg's Caden Allen, while Wyatt Meade (152) and Brogan Lefever (101) of U/UV each lost by decision.

Saturday's matches begin at 9:30 a.m. with the championship matches taking place Sunday at 6:05 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Schenevus 53, Roxbury 48 (Wednesday)

The Schenevus boys outlasted Roxbury 53-48 in the first round of the Section IV Class D tournament Wednesday at home.

Allen Osborne had a game-high 21 points to lead the Dragons while Jackson Reed added 17 points and Lucien Kortekaas netted nine points in the win.

Jordan Johnston was Roxbury's leading scorer with 11 points.

Schenevus will visit Milford Saturday in the quarterfinal round while Roxbury concludes its season with a 9-12 record.

Cherry Valley-Springfield held off a Worcester comeback effort to win 50-46 on the road Wednesday in the first round of the Section IV Class D tournament.

Duane Lefevre led the Patriots with 14 points while Dalton Stocking added seven points in the win.

Tyler Head had a game-high 18 points for the Wolverines while Matthew Sanders scored 10 points in the loss.

CV-S will visit top-seeded South Kortright Saturday in the quarterfinal round while Worcetser ends its season at 11-9.
