Purdue football receiver Jahmal Edrine tears ACL, done for season

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue football's air raid offense lost what was expected to be one of its major contributors.

Redshirt sophomore receiver Jahmal Edrine suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during last Friday's practice and will miss the season.

"You talk about a guy we had high hopes for and was showing a lot of promise in being able to be productive for us," Purdue football coach Ryan Walters said. "He's got the right mindset though. He's a young guy so he'll have a great career here and luckily for us, we're deep in that room."

Edrine transferred to Purdue after spending the past two seasons at Florida Atlantic and had impressed during the summer and early fall.

"Jahmal Edrine is a big guy, a physical guy from Florida and he's doing some good things for us so far," senior receiver TJ Sheffield said during Big Ten media day on July 27.

For FAU, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Edrine redshirted in 2021 and last season caught 39 passes for 570 yards and six touchdowns a year ago, including a 39-yard reception in Ross-Ade Stadium during Purdue's 28-26 win over the Owls.

Additionally, redshirt junior lineman Josh Kaltenberger was carted off the field late during Tuesday's practice.

Kaltenberger played in all 14 games last season, including starting the final three games for the injured Gus Hartwig. Hartwig continues to ease back into the mix and was back on the field for certain periods during Tuesday's full pads practice.
