Pueblo's top prep games of the week: May 1-6

With the spring sports season nearing its end, the action across all sports is starting to ramp up.

Spring weather reared its ugly head last week, so this week is chock-full of exciting games to watch for all the Pueblo schools.

You can catch plenty of soccer, tennis regionals, golf, lacrosse, volleyball, some twilight track and field action, swim and diving championships, with baseball playoff positioning on the line.  

Each week, the Chieftain selects the best home games to watch for the upcoming week. 

Here are our selections for May 1-6:

Girls tennis

  • La Junta vs. Pueblo Centennial at City Park, 4 p.m. Monday, May 1

  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo Central High School, 4 p.m. Monday, May 1 

  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo Central High School, 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 2

  • Pueblo West vs. Pueblo East at Pueblo East High School, 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 2

  • Girls Varsity Regional Tournament at City Park, 9 a.m. Friday, May 5 and 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6

The regional tournaments are just around the corner. The Wildcats are 3-0 in the 3A Region 7 standings, with East sitting on a 3-3 record, Centennial with a 1-1 record, and South with an 0-3 record. 4A Region 7 sees Pueblo County with a 4-0 record and Pueblo West with a 2-1 record in the league.

Girls soccer

  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo Centennial at Langoni Field, 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 1 (rescheduled from April 25)

  • Fountain Valley vs. Rye at Rye High School, 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 1

  • Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 1 

  • Thomas MacLaren School vs. Rye at Rye High School, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2

  • Pueblo West vs. Pueblo County at Pueblo County High School, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4

  • Falcon vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 5

If you love soccer, this is just the week for you. Due to the weather last week, several games were rescheduled for this week. Pueblo County is still in the lead of the South-Central League standings, with a 6-0-1 record in the league. West is right behind them with a 5-1 tally, and Centennial is in third with a 4-2-1 record after tying County last week 2-2. This week’s action could see a shuffle amongst the top of the league standings.

Boys volleyball

  • Colorado Springs Christian vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 1

  • Canon City vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2

The Colt’s co-op team is looking to try and finish out the season strong with their final two home games. After a disappointing start to the season, the Colts are looking to set the stage for next year with a strong performance against the Lions and the Tigers to end their season.

Baseball

The race for the top spot in the South-Central is starting to get interesting as we near the end of the regular season. The Pueblo West Cyclones have turned their rough start to the season around and have taken the top spot in the S-CL standings with a 5-0 record after defeating County last week 1-0. County now sits in second, with a 4-1 record, just ahead of Pueblo East, with a 3-2 record. Pueblo County was ranked the top team in Class 4A as of the latest CHSAA standings, but that may change after their loss to West. Rye is ranked in the top 10 of Class 2A and holds a record of 8-5.

Boys swim and dive

  • Fountain Valley vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo East, 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 2

  • SCL Championships: Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo County at Pueblo County, 8 a.m. Friday, May 5 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6

The boys swimming season is nearing its end, and it’s the final chance for some divers and swimmers to qualify for the state tournament. Central is Hosting Fountain Valley on Tuesday before taking on County in the South-Central League Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Girls golf

  • Pueblo Central Invite at Elmwood Golf Course, 9 a.m. Thursday, May 4

  • Hornet Invitational at Holly Dot Golf Course, 9 a.m. Friday, May 5 (rescheduled from April 28)

The girls have two back-to-back rounds this week as their season slowly comes to an end. The Pueblo Central City Invite will be held at Elmwood Golf Course on Thursday, and on Friday the teams head up to Holly Dot Golf Course to play out the Hornet Invitational, which was rescheduled from last week. Pueblo West, Pueblo Central, Pueblo South, Pueblo County, Pueblo East, Pueblo Centennial, Rye, and Swallows Charter are all expected to participate.

Girls lacrosse

  • Denver South vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3

  • Castle View vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 5 p.m. Thursday, May 4

The final home games of the season for the girls lacrosse team are coming up this week as they take on Denver South and Castle View at home at Pueblo West High School. The Cyclones are 1-1 in the 4A South league standings and need wins against the top two teams in the standings to have a shot at returning to the playoffs for the second time in program history.

Track and field

  • Twilight Invite at CSU-Pueblo Thunderbowl, 1 p.m. Friday, May 5

One of the final opportunities for Pueblo’s track and field athletes to qualify for this year's state finals tournament will take place this week at CSU Pueblo’s Thunderbowl. The annual Pueblo Twilight Invitational is taking place outside of Dutch Clark this year due to the ongoing construction at the stadium.

Boys lacrosse

  • Resurrection Christian vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6

The third-place Cyclones team needs to secure some more wins if they hope to qualify for the postseason this year. The next opportunity at home will come against Resurrection Christian, currently in fourth place in their 4A Northern league standings.
