Previewing the top Week 3 high school football games in the Wichita Falls area

FRIDAY’S SPECIAL

Burkburnett at Iowa Park

When/where: 8 p.m. Friday, Hawk Stadium

Live updates: Follow @CoryHogueSports on X (formerly Twitter). Listen on 104.7 FM (Iowa Park).

Records: Burkburnett 1-1; Iowa Park 0-2

Last game: Krum 19, Burkburnett 16; Benbrook 34, Iowa Park 28 (OT)

Last meeting: Burkburnett 29, Iowa Park 22 (2022); Burkburnett leads all-time series 50-31-2.

Players to watch: Burkburnett, Kyler Kirkland (RB/LB, Sr.), Buddy Owen (OL, Jr.), Reid Baughman (DL, Sr.); Iowa Park, Parker Allen (QB, Sr.), Rody Williams (WR/DB, Sr.), Barrett Brown (TE/LB, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: This is the 84th meeting between the Wichita County rivals with the series dating back to 1921. Burkburnett got its first win against Iowa Park since 2018 last season. It was only the second time in the last seven meetings that Burk beat Iowa Park. … Both teams are coming off close losses with Iowa Park searching for its first win of the season. The Hawks fell in overtime against Benbrook last week after making a fourth-quarter comeback to tie the game. … Both teams have had more success running the ball rather than passing it this season.

PREMIUM ENTREES

Rider at Lubbock Coronado

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Lowrey Field

Live updates: Listen on ROHOSportsNetwork.com. Watch on Lubbock ISD YouTube channel.

Records: Rider 2-0; Coronado 0-2

Last game: Midland High 48, Coronado 13; Rider 38, Decatur 14

Last meeting: Rider 28, Coronado 24 (2022); Coronado leads all-time series 6-2.

Players to watch: Coronado, Surreal Garrett (WR, Sr.), Willie Parker (LB, Sr.), Demarion Finch (RB, Jr.); Rider, Jailyn Gibbs (DL/LB, Sr.), Kenji Johnson (RB/K, Jr.), Ben Carr (LB, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: Coronado is a deceiving 0-2 with both losses coming against Class 6A opponents Frenship and Midland High. … Rider’s two victories against Coronado have come in tight games, including last season’s 28-24 win. Receiver Baylor Wilson caught a 55-yard TD pass for the go-ahead score in the middle of the fourth quarter, and the Rider defense mounted a seven-play goal line stand to preserve the lead.

Windthorst at Muenster

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Hornet Stadium

Live updates: Follow @ArcherCoSports on Twitter (formerly X). Watch on Muenster ISD’s YouTube channel.

Records: Windthorst 1-0; Muenster 0-2

Last game: Paradise 33, Muenster 0; Windthorst 37, Henrietta 34

Last meeting: Muenster 31, Windthorst 13 (2022).

Players to watch: Muenster, Brody Taylor (WR/DB, Sr.), Dawson Voth (WR/DB, Sr.), Caden Klement (RB/LB, Jr.); Windthorst, Brock Belcher (QB, Fr.), Kolby Teakell (WR/DB, Sr.), Brayden Berend (WR/DB, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: This matchup hasn’t been played a lot throughout the history of the programs but has emerged recently as a regional rivalry. The Trojans and Hornets spent two seasons in the same district, and Muenster was a significant hump for Windthorst to get past during its state title run in 2020. … On paper, Muenster is going through at least a slight rebuild with eight lettermen back from last season. … Freshman Brock Belcher had an impressive varsity debut as Windthorst’s quarterback two weeks ago, completing 19 of 21 passes for 344 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Holliday at Idalou

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Taylor/Reddell Field

Live updates: Watch on idalouisd.net/355218_2.

Records: Holliday 1-1; Idalou 1-1.

Last game: Jim Ned 40, Holliday 22; Idalou 42, New Deal 3

Last meeting: Holliday 37, Idalou 7 (2022); Idalou leads all-time series 2-1.

Players to watch: Holliday, Grant Cox (QB, Sr.), Isaac Villa (WR/DB, Sr.), Collin Hays (RB/LB, Sr.); Idalou, Tate Hendley (QB, Sr.), Blake Dyas (RB/DB, Sr.); Colton Hurst (OL/DL, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: Idalou provides Holliday with another stout opponent as the Eagles transition into a new era under first-year head coach Kyle Atwood. The Wildcats are coming off an impressive performance against New Deal for their first win of the season. … Holliday is needing to bounce back after a setback against Jim Ned. Quarterback Grant Cox has played well in the Eagles’ spread offense, throwing for 294 yards and rushing for 146.

APPETIZERS

Springtown at Hirschi

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium

Live updates: Follow @Hull_TRN and @Naomi_TRN on X (formerly Twitter). Watch on WFISD’s YouTube channel.

Records: Springtown 0-2; Hirschi 1-1.

Last game: Graham 36, Springtown 15; Brock 28, Hirschi 14

Last meeting: Hirschi 50, Springtown 27 (2022); Springtown leads all-time series 8-5.

Players to watch: Springtown, Hudson Hulett (QB, Sr.), Yair Hernandez (LB, Sr.), Drake Doggett (RB/DB, Sr.); Hirschi, Javian Frazier (RB/DL/LB, Sr.), Jimmell McFalls (QB, Jr.), Isaiah Flores (LB, Jr.).

Why it’s tasty: This is a former district matchup that has carried over to the Huskies’ non-district slate after dropping to Class 4A Division II last season. The Huskies have won three straight against the Porcupines. … Springtown is buoyed by senior quarterback Hudson Hulett, son of head coach Brian Hulett. The younger Hulett is in his fourth season starting behind center. … The Huskies are coming off a valiant performance against a Brock team expected to contend for the Class 3A Division I championship. Hirschi was within 21-14 in the fourth quarter before Brock sealed the game late.

Electra at Nocona

When/where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jack Crain Stadium

Live updates: Follow @trnsports on X (formerly Twitter).

Records: Electra 1-1; Nocona 2-0.

Last game: Electra 61, Memphis 20; Nocona 55, Quanah 6

Last meeting: Nocona 58, Electra 7 (2022); Electra leads all-time series 22-10-2.

Players to watch: Electra, Collin McKiddy (QB, Sr.), Jeremiah Murphy (WR, Jr.), Ian McKiddy (WR, Fr.); Nocona, Johnathan Stone (RB/LB, Sr.), Brady McCasland (QB/DB, Sr.), Charlie Fuller (WR/DB, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: PigskinPrep’s 24-point line favoring Nocona over Electra may be misleading. That computer formula doesn’t adjust for the presence of the McKiddy brothers, Collin and Ian, who have changed the complexion of the Electra program. Their father, Josh McKiddy, is the Tigers’ first-year head coach and led the Tigers to a 61-20 victory over Memphis. Electra has already out produced last season’s offense, which scored 71 points in 10 games. … Nocona is a tougher matchup for the Tigers than Memphis. The Indians have numerous multi-year varsity starters, owning a distinct advantage in experience.

PigskinPrep.com says: Nocona by 24.

Glen Rose at Graham

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Newton Field

Live updates: Listen on 100.5 FM (Graham). Watch on Graham High School Steers and Lady Blues YouTube channel.

Records: Glen Rose 1-1; Graham 2-0.

Last game: Glen Rose 21, Gatesville 20; Graham 36, Springtown 15

Last meeting: Glen Rose 55, Graham 14 (2022 bi-district playoff); Graham leads all-time series 5-3.

Players to watch: Glen Rose, Camden Raymond (TE/LB, Sr.), Keltyn Raymond (DL, Jr.), Adrian Sanchez (WR, Jr.); Graham, Ty Thompson (QB, Jr.), Peyton Kinman (WR/DB, Sr.), Rylan Monsey (RB, Jr.).

Why it’s tasty: Glen Rose won Region I-4A Division II last season, falling to Carthage in the state semifinals. The Tigers gave Carthage its toughest challenge of the season. But the Tigers were hit hard by graduation and find themselves regrouping early. … Graham is on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Steers’ roster is filled with returning starters, including several with at least two years of varsity experience.
