Prep roundup: Howell's Gabby Piepho has record-setting night despite foul problems

If not for first-half foul trouble, Gabby Piepho might have set two Howell girls basketball records Friday night.

She had to settle for one, but given the fact she is early in her sophomore season, Piepho will likely own the other eventually.

Piepho hit a school-record eight 3-pointers during a 34-point performance, leading the Highlanders to a 60-59 victory over Farmington Hills Mercy.

She broke the school mark of seven 3-pointers set by Lean Antilla against Ann Arbor Huron in 2000.

Piepho finished four points shy of the scoring record of 38 set by Alexis Miller against Livonia Stevenson on Dec. 19, 2017. Her previous career high came in a 24-point performance against Stevenson late last season.

“She was in foul trouble the whole first half,” Howell coach Jason Piepho said. “She probably only played 21, 22 minutes of the game. She was very efficient, and it was a tough game.

“We battled some foul trouble throughout the game. We had some key players with three fouls in the third. Gabby had three in the first half. We just kind of battled through it, kept fighting and the kids made plays at the end, whether it was defensively or offensively. It was a good team effort to get the W.”

Howell's Gabby Piepho, defended by Farmington Hills Mercy's Avery Birkett, scored 34 points and hit a school-record eight 3-pointers Friday, Dec. 8, 2023.

Mercy had a chance to send the game to overtime with two free throws with 0.1 seconds on the clock. The first shot was good, but the second missed.

“It was a different kind of game for me,” coach Piepho said. “I’ve never given up 59 points in a W. It was clearly an offensive game, but there was a lot of defensive manipulation that was happening. It was good offense against good defense, and the good offense kept winning.”

Hannah Ralko had 10 points, while Alison Farr had five points and eight rebounds for Howell (2-0).

Fowlerville 46, Okemos 43

Mariah Kirby scored 18 points, Tommi Kleinschmidt 10 and Tori Briggs seven for Fowlerville (2-1).

Kleinschmidt scored 19 points Thursday for Fowlerville, which got at least one point, one rebound and one steal from each of its players.
