Prep roundup: Hartland wins golf tournament on state finals course

Hartland won the championship as Livingston County teams took three of the first four places in the Bedford Valley Invitational in Battle Creek.

Hartland shot 304 to edge Detroit Catholic Central and Howell by one stroke. Brighton took fourth out of 11 teams with a 305 on the course that will host the state Division 1 tournament June 7 and 8.

Sophomore Michael Maurin of Hartland was first out of 55 golfers with a 73, winning by one stroke over David Krusinski of Detroit Catholic Central.

Finishing in a tie for third place with 75s were Keller King and Aidan Oake of Hartland, Adam Forcier of Brighton and Zach Spencer of Howell.

Howell’s Rory Sturos and Gavin Hill tied for seventh with 76s. Tying for 14th with 78s were Derek Kantola of Howell and Riley Morton of Brighton.

Jackson Frelich of Brighton tied for 23rd with an 80, while Hartland’s Dallas Korponic and Brady Betteley tied for 26th with 81s.

Softball

Hartland 5, Traverse City Central 4

Kaitlyn Brennan’s single with one out in the top of the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie.

Brennan and Skylar Spisz were 3-for-4 for the Eagles in the first game of a two-game northern Michigan trip.

Gaylord 10, Hartland 0

Gaylord’s Jayden Jones allowed three hits and struck out seven batters in 5 1/3 innings in a matchup between the reigning state champions in Michigan’s two largest divisions.

Grand Ledge 2, Brighton 1

Brighton’s Belle Sixbery pitched in both games, striking out 20 batters and allowing only seven hits in 10 innings.

A bunt single by Isabella Perez gave Grand Ledge a walk-off victory in the seventh inning of the opener.

Holt Invitational

Jada Challiss was 4-for-7 with three home runs and five RBIs in three games, as Howell went 1-2.

The Highlanders (9-13-1) lost 7-6 to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and 9-8 to Holt before winning 14-1 over Springport.

Lara Anderson homered against St. Mary’s.

Ava Bunting was 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs against Springport.

Williamston 16, Pinckney 6

Pinckney 12, Williamston 2

Pinckney’s Violet McWhinnie went 6-for-8 with four RBIs in the doubleheader.

Mackenzie Burns and CeCe Thorington each had three hits in the first game. Erin Closser homered in the second game, while Natally Pease struck out nine batters in six innings.

Baseball

Brighton 1, Oxford 0 (8)

Brighton’s Andrew Everson won a pitchers’ duel in the opener, allowing only two hits while facing only two batters over the minimum in eight innings.

Oxford’s Dean Rice had a no-hitter before being pulled after 6 2/3 innings because he reached his pitch limit.

The Bulldogs scored the game’s only run when Carter Gregg doubled with two outs and scored on a double by Parker Aten in the top of the eighth inning.

Gregg was 3-for-4 in the second game, while Jack Renner allowed one unearned run in six innings for the Bulldogs (16-8).

Howell 13, Linden 2

Howell 10, Linden 4

Nick Hoorn had a triple, double and four RBIs in the first game for Howell (10-13). Brett Parris had two doubles and four RBIs, while Justin Jones was 3-for-4 with a triple and double.

In the second game, Duncan Gray had a triple and double for the Highlanders.

Hartland 3, Detroit Edison 0

Michael Bernardi pitched a seven-inning shutout, fanning seven. Lucas Frack was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Hartland.

Walled Lake Northern 6, Hartland 3

Down 2-1, Northern scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Ty Kraut allowed one run in five innings, while Grahm DeSantis was 2-for-3 for Hartland (17-8-1).

Ypsilanti Lincoln 19, Pinckney 10

Pinckney 4, Ypsilanti Lincoln 4

Nolan Carruthers, Evan McGlothin, Talon Koppmann and Owen Zylka each drove in two runs in the opener for Pinckney (12-9-2). Carruthers was 2-for-4 and pitched two innings of shutout relief in the second game, which was called by darkness.

Track and field

Davison Twilight Classic

Fowlerville senior Adam Aeschliman won pole vault in the medium school division with a personal-best effort of 13 feet.

Jacob Esch took third in shot put (44-1.75) and discus (152-7), while Owen Presley was third in the 200-meter dash (23.21 seconds).

Lutheran Westland Warrior Invitational

Charyl Stockwell’s boys had the top two pole vaulters, with Nathan Vaske clearing 11-6 and Jason Zarate 11 feet.

Anthony Urbaniak was second in the 3,200 (10:35.27) and third in the 1,600 (4:49.87). Owen Carlson was second in the 110 hurdles (17.34) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.91).

Becka Lethorn of Stockwell won the girls pole vault at 7-6. Rachel Lanning was fourth in the 400 (1:05.44) for the Sentinels.

Taylor Wiegand of Livingston Christian won the 1,600 (5:44.08) and was fourth in the 800 (2:38.00).

Lincoln Last Chance Invite

Brady Millington of Brighton won the 800 in 2:02.99.

Girls lacrosse

Hinsdale (Ill.) 10, Brighton 6

Georgia Gill had one goal and five assists, while Sophia Heady and Maggie Burchfield each scored twice for Brighton.

Gabby Buckenberger made 11 saves for the Bulldogs.
