Prep Roundup: Frankfort girls win B.C. Pizza Classic; Mancelona's Wildfong picks up 100th career wrestling win

Jan. 20—ST. IGNACE — The trip north was worth it for the Frankfort Panthers as the varsity girls basketball team took home the championship at the B.C. Pizza Classic at St. Ignace LaSalle on Saturday.

The Panthers (9-3, 2-3 Northwest) knocked off Menominee in a first-round defensive battle, 36-31. Evelyn VanTol led the Panthers with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Addie Chownyk reached double figures with 10 points while playing outstanding defense. Savina Anhalt had a strong game as well, chipping in seven points with seven rebounds, six assists, six steals and four blocks.

In the championship game, Frankfort took down the host Saints by a 59-45 final. Chownyk led all scorers with 22 points and seven rebounds. VanTol added 17 points, and Anhalt once again did a bit of everything with nine points, 10 boards, six dimes and four thefts. Elie Rommel added eight points and five assists.

WRESTLING

Ironmen go 4-1, Wildfong picks up No. 100 at home meet

MANCELONA — Saturday provided a milestone moment for Mancelona's Jaymes Wildfong as the senior Ironman went 5-0 and notched his 100th career win on his home mat at the Mancelona Invitational.

"Jaymes had very hard matches today," Mancelona head coach Joe Johnston said. "He was a trooper."

Wildfong is a four-year varsity wrestler and two-year captain for the Ironmen, who finished the tournament in second place with a 4-1 record behind champion Tri-County's 4-0 team mark. Wildfong beat Tri-County's Tristan VanTimmeran at 132 pounds for win No. 100.

"It was a really tough match, but I didn't doubt myself during the match. He got the first takedown, but I got the reversal in the second," Wildfong said. "It was my toughest match all year. I wanted it, and I've been working hard to get there."

Manton finished the invite at 2-3 while McBain went 1-4 and Kalkaska was 0-5 on the day.

West's Quigley wins individual title at Mio Invite

MIO — Matthew Quigley continued his impressive 2023-24 season with an individual championship at the Mio Invitational on Saturday.

The Traverse City West wrestler won his weight bracket at 120 pounds. Alex Reynolds (126) and Brady Vaughan (215) took second place in their brackets. Trapper Holmes was third at 157 pounds. Caleb Thomas took fourth at 132. Finn O'Brien and Aiden Geetings were both in sixth place at 106 and 120 pounds, respectively. Logan Keller was seventh at 165 pounds.

In the girls tournament, West's Abby Dahl was second at 235 pounds. Both Abby Farkas (125) and Anna Beers (130) took third place, and Addison Geetings was fourth at 145 pounds.

Traverse City St. Francis also competed at the Mio Invite and had two finalists. Both Tyler Sheeran and Luke Harper finished in second place. Dex Nance was seventh with a 2-1 record on the day, and Ben Eckler was 2-2.

Benzie 10th, Kingsley 20th at Hudson tournament

HUDSON — Benzie Central took 10th place out of 31 teams at the Hudson wrestling tournament Saturday. Kingsley finished 20th.

High finishers for the Huskies were Jacob Gillison, Conner Wenkel, Michael Pfieffer and Lane Sanchez, who all took fifth place.

Kingsley's top finisher was Max Goethals, who took second in his weight class.
