The Cheboygan Chiefs picked up a recent hockey victory at Tawas.

TAWAS – It was a victory the Cheboygan Chiefs hockey team really needed to have.

And the Chiefs got it.

With 58 seconds left in overtime, Cheboygan senior Jordan Socolovitch came up with a game-winning goal to help the Chiefs pick up a 3-2 victory at Tawas on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

“(The goal) was huge,” said Cheboygan coach Craig Coxe, whose team snapped a six-game losing streak with the win. “That’s definitely what the boys needed. You drop six in a row – and a lot of those games we played well, we just didn’t play well to win – so the boys came out really good on Wednesday. I was really happy for them, and they were extremely happy to get the victory.”

The Chiefs (3-7) found themselves down 1-0 after one period of play, as Sean Bernard scored the first of his two goals for the Braves late in the first.

The Chiefs tied the game thanks to a goal from senior Jacob Jankoviak with 8:06 left in the second. The teams remained tied going into the intermission.

Cheboygan found itself down again after Bernard netted his second goal with 11:35 left, but the Chiefs responded once more when junior Gavin Rose tied things up with an unassisted goal about six minutes later.

The Cheboygan equalizer later set the stage for Socolovitch, whose game-winning goal was assisted by Warren Farver and Ethan Shepard. Assisting on the Jankoviak goal were Blaine Baldwin and Patrick Smith.

“That was his first goal as a Chief,” Coxe said of Socolovitch’s winner. “He’s been playing (defenseman) for four years, and we moved him up front, and he did really well. He’s an experienced player, he did a really job, somebody took a shot on net, he went down there for the rebound and buried it, so yeah, he was pretty happy.”

Cheboygan travels to Alpena to face Capital City and Manistee in matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 27-28.
