Prep report: East wins latest all-McDonald basketball clash
Feb. 22—Son Rhett's Duluth East Greyhounds got the better of father Mike's Cambridge-Isanti in the latest McDonald family boys basketball clash on Thursday night in Cambridge, Minnesota.
Ty Nyberg scored 21 to lead an East squad that had four players in double figures.
East, which led 35-30 at the half in its last road game of the regular season, got 17 points from Brennan Meyer, 15 from Bjorn Lind and 10 from Caleb Winkels.
The Greyhounds are 8-15 on the season.
The Tigers figured out a way past 6-foot-9 Cumberland junior Gavin Gorres to get a road win to finish off the regular season.
Gorres made seven 3-pointers and scored a stupendous 47 points, but Bryce Priem kept up his hot streak, scoring 29 points. He has 90 points in the Tigers' last three games.
Northwestern played most of the game from behind before taking control with five minutes to go.
Boden Teal finished with 12 points and Tyson Teal 10 for Northwestern, which finished in second place in the Heart O'North and carries a 17-7 overall record (15-3 conference) into the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament against St. Croix Falls on Tuesday night.
Chloe Carlson drilled six 3-pointers as the Rails won their regular-season finale on Thursday night.
Proctor, which led 31-24 at the half, also got 24 points from Lily Smith as they overcame a 26-point game from the Dragons' Karly Jusczak.
The Rails await their Section 7AA seeding with a 20-6 regular-season record.
Lelani Fonoti of Cloquet outscored the opponent by herself as the Lumberjacks routed Hibbing to conclude their regular season with a 17-9 record.
Fonoti finished with 29 points for the Lumberjacks, who didn't put Hibbing away until outscoring them 35-10 in the second half.
Candice Ndomb had 20 points, but the Greyhounds still came up on the short end on Thursday night in Osseo.
Jordan Zubich had a 32-point, 11-assist showing as the Rangers wiped out the Bluestreaks on Thursday night in Mountain Iron. The senior was three rebounds short of a triple-double for MIB (23-2), the No. 2-ranked Class AA team in Minnesota.
Hali Savela added 20 points and Gabby Lira 16.
Proctor/Hermantown found itself behind briefly in the third period but rallied to defeat Luverne 3-2 on Thursday in a Class A consolation semifinal at the state girls hockey tournament at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
Ellie Van Batavia put the Cardinals up 2-1 with a power-play goal 1:08 into the third period, but Proctor/Hermantown started putting its territorial advantage to good use down the stretch. Addison Hieb tied the game up a little over four minutes later. The Mirage then punished a Luverne high-sticking penalty when Hannah Graves scored the go-ahead goal at 7:40 of the third period.
Proctor/Hermantown outshot Luverne 27-5 over the last two periods.
Neelah McLeod made 11 saves for the win.
The Mirage will play for the consolation championship on Saturday morning against Willmar back at TRIA Rink.
