Prep report: Cloquet wins Duluth East volleyball tourney

Sep. 23—Cloquet emerged victorious from a nine-team field at the Duluth East Invite volleyball tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks swept Deer River and Hill Murray in pool play to join a three-team gold playoff bracket with Brainerd and Calumet (Michigan).

The Lumberjacks knocked off the Warriors 25-18, 25-21 to set up a championship match with the U.P.-based Copper Kings, which they won comfortably by scores of 25-17, 25-16.

Duluth East (2-2) was sixth and Duluth Denfeld (1-3) eighth.

Northwestern got into the win column twice at its home tournament, the 38th annual Heidi Zosel Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Maple.

Northwestern knocked off Solon Springs 25-14, 25-19 in pool play before dropping a 23-25, 25-16, 15-7 decision to Baldwin-Woodville.

That put them into the Silver Division semifinals, where they were swept by Spooner. Northwestern then defeated Chetek-Weyerhauser 25-15, 17-25, 15-9 for seventh place in the 12-team field. Solon Springs was 12th.

Anders Gunelson got the Lumberjacks off to a great start, scoring in the first minute of play as CEC rolled to victory in Princeton.

CEC scored four times in the first half to take firm control of the game, with Hudson Snesrud, Elijah Aultman and Brody Dushkin getting on the scoresheet.

Aultman added a second goal in the 67th minute and Joe Bailey added a 76th-minute penalty kick.

Walker Marquardt made four saves.

Grace Karakas' second-half goal from Lilly Kuettel's assist netted the Greyhounds a victory on an ugly weather day at Ordean Stadium.

'Hounds goalkeeper Maggie Winesett earned the shutout with four saves.

Britta Koski scored a pair of goals as Esko broke a 1-1 tie at the half for a victory.

Jordan Stodola had Esko's other goal, while Hannah Roemer made a pair of saves.

Senior Mariah Hernesman scored twice on her birthday as the Hilltoppers went on the road to defeat a Section 7A opponent in Forest Lake on Saturday.

Nina Thorson had two other goals for Marshall, while freshman Giulia McGiffer had the fifth. Sophomore Sophie Olek had a pair of assists, while Abby Regstad and Svea Gustafson split time in goal.
