Prep report: Bluejackets edge Spartans boys hockey on the Range
Jan. 25—Second-period goals from Kelin Elsner and Jace Kampsula proved to be enough cushion for Hibbing/Chisholm to get past Superior 3-2 in a Lake Superior Conference boys hockey game on Thursday night, Jan. 25 at Hibbing Memorial Arena.
Tate Swanson for the Bluejackets and Tyler Olson for the Spartans (7-10-1) exchanged quick goals in the first period before Elsner and Kampsula struck. Cayden Reamer scored with a minute left in the second period on the power play, but there were no goals to be had for either side in the third.
Benny Galli had a pair of assists for Hibbing/Chisholm (13-7), which held a 34-11 advantage in shots on goal mitigated by Superior goaltender's Trent Peterson's 31 saves. Rex Walli was needed for just nine for the Bluejackets.
For only the third time this season, one of Marshall's opponents kept Ilsa Lindaman from scoring but it wasn't enough for a victory on Thursday, Jan. 25 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Lindaman still made her presence felt, issuing the primary assist on the eventual game-winning goal from Nina Thorson with 3:47 to play in the second period.
The senior St. Thomas commit had scored in the Hilltoppers' last 12 consecutive games dating back to a Dec. 2 contest vs. Brainerd/Little Falls. Only one opponent, Roseville/Mahtomedi on Nov. 18, has held Lindaman off the scoresheet entirely.
Sarah Stauber (Duluth Marshall) and Megan Hattenberger (Moose Lake) exchanged goals in the first period.
Mallory Hartl kept the Rebels (11-10-1) in it with 40 saves, while Ray Anderson stopped 25 shots for the Hilltoppers (18-2-1). The teams meet again in Moose Lake on Monday night.
The Hilltoppers rained threes on the Lumberjacks on Thursday night, connecting 14 times from outside in a Lake Superior Conference home win.
Regan Juenemann had six of them, while five others had at least one, helping Marshall (11-7) overcome a 44-38 halftime deficit.
On the same day her brother Brooks scored his 2,000th varsity point and less than a week after reaching 1,000, Chloe Johnson started on the road to 2,000 with a 29-point effort, while Juenemann finished with 28.
Kiley Issendorf also had six triples for Cloquet, which fell to 10-8 despite 19 points from her and 20 apiece from Ava Carlson and Leilani Fonoti.
The Duluth East girls got off to a great start offensively and carried it to a home victory.
The Hounds (8-11) led 36-21 at the half. Lilly Kuettel and Candice Ndomb scored 16 points apiece, while Maggie Winesett scored 10 more.
The Bombers shut down the Agates offense in the second half, turning a tied game (28-28) at halftime into a confident road victory by outscoring the hosts 35-12 after the break.
Barnum showed good balance with three scorers in double figures paced by 17 from Janaya Jurek. Elia Heaton added 14 and Sophia Frank 11.
Tresa Baumgard and Avaya Fontaine scored 20 points apiece as the 15-3 Bluestreaks got past the Polar Bears on Thursday night in Chisholm.
Kenzie Kiminski scored 20 for Floodwood (10-5), which trailed 35-28 at the half but was held to 18 second-half points.
Eleven Esko players scored, led by 20 points from Cairin Berger and 13 by Hannah Swanson.
Piper Nielson led the Rebels with 10.
The Tigers got 24 points from Anna Serna, but found themselves too far behind to get back into the game after scoring just eight points in the first half.
Gavin Williams scored 18 to lead the Tigers to a Heart O'North road victory on Thusday night, Jan. 15. Boden Teal and Tyler Nelson added 15 apiece.
Stephen McGee poured in 27 and Gage Olson and 24 as the Raiders cruised to a road win on the long trip up to International Falls.
The Raiders (10-7) led 43-19 at halftime.
