Prep football: SMCC, Whiteford, Dundee, Carlson, Huron, Mason win

FLAT ROCK – St. Mary Catholic Central scored 14 unanswered to knock Flat Rock out of first place in the Huron League Friday night.

The Rams came into the game in a three-way tie for first place, but SMCC improved to 3-4 with a 27-18 victory.

Flat Rock led 6-0 only briefly in the first quarter against an ailing Falcon squad.

"We had a very rough week this week," SMCC coach Adam Kipf said. "We didn't even practice Tuesday because we had over half the team home sick. They responded. They came out and played well. They put a lot of things together that we've been coaching them up to do. They did a lot of things right tonight and it showed."

"We had to play physical," Kipf said. "We haven't played physical all year. We've struggled, but tonight we were physical up front. I was proud of our offensive line. They got the job done."

Flat Rock quarterback Graham Junge connected with Adam Szalay in the end zone twice in the second half with TD receptions of 3 and 7 yards. Brian Booms had a 2-yard rushing score in the opening quarter.

DeBarr, Ruddy, Knaggs and Cooper Bieber added second-half touchdowns for the 7-0 Bobcats. Whiteford had 25 first downs, compared to six for Reading. Whiteford’s defense held the Rangers to 83 yards of offense.

“The biggest thing was to come out and do what we are supposed to do,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said. “I think all the way around, other than the drive right before halftime, I think we did alright. Defensively, we played really good, especially with some of the things they were doing. We had to adjust on the fly.”

Dundee 15, Hillsdale 14

DUNDEE – Dundee took the lead on a two-point conversion with less than two minutes remaining and then blocked a potential game-winning field goal by Hillsdale to improve to 4-3.

"It's hard to say which was the bigger play, the block or the 2-point conversion," Dundee coach Steve Ayer said.

Trailing 14-7, Dundee's Jackson Martin caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Zanger with 1:30 to play. The Vikings went ahead on a two-point conversion run by Zanger.

Hillsdale (2-5) worked down the field in the final minute and got into field-goal range, but the attempt was blocked by Dundee's Braiden Whitaker.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime. Hillsdale opened the scoring in the third and had an extra-point kick blocked by Dundee's Cooper Buhl. The Vikings took a 7-6 lead on a 2-yard TD run by Joey Brink.

Dundee improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Lenawee County Athletic Association with games ahead against Hudson and Ida.

“Everything we want is still in front of us,” Ayers said. “We’re probably not going to win the league title, but we can still make the playoffs.”

Gibraltar Carlson 31, Woodhaven 8

WOODHAVEN – Quarterback Joe Krolak got Gibraltar Carlson off to a fast start.

He ran for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass to Landon Vida in the first half.

The Marauders also got a TD run by Izaiah Wright and a field goal from Kyler Ostrowski for a 31-0 halftime lead.

That was all of the scoring for Carlson, which won its sixth straight game and improved to 6-1 heading into next week's Downriver League showdown with Allen Park.

Wright ran for 260 yards on 29 carries.

New Boston Huron 21, Grosse Ile 7

GROSSE ILE – Micah Smith had a big night as New Boston Huron earned its third win of the season.

Smith ran 8 and 22 yards for the Chiefs’ first two touchdowns, then threw a 9-yard TD pass to Brad Hughes.

He finished 9-of-18 for 101 yards and ran for 92 yards on 18 attempts.

Ryan Anderson had four catches for 71 yards, Brennan Caldwell ran 12 times for 67 yards and Drew Ladach led the defense with six tackles.

Huron improved to 3-4.

Erie Mason 52, Quincy 27

ERIE – Vaughn Brown threw for three touchdowns in the first half as Erie Mason pushed its record to 3-4.

Phoenix Stefko (13 yards), Toby Frazier (49) and Korbin Herrera (7) caught TD passes. Cole Kreger and Login Goodin each ran for two scores and Michael Narew scored the final TD.

The Eagles, who finish with road games against Reading and Sand Creek, still harbors playoff hopes.

“We definitely played some tough games early to put ourselves in this situation,” coach Steve Bowers said. “We were looking at the last three weeks as all winnable. This one was kind of the first one of those. We came out and played a fairly good game.”

Ann Arbor Huron 28, Bedford 21

TEMPERANCE – Ann Arbor Huron took advantage of a turnover at the end of the third quarter to send Bedford to its fourth loss in the past five games.

Lucas Gerber (23 yards) and Brandon Rozek (4 yards) ran for touchdowns in the first half, then the Mules took a 21-20 lead with 4:47 left in the third quarter on a 42-yard run by Owen Przybylski. It stayed that way until the final minute of the quarter when Huron recovered a fumble near midfield and scored on the ensuing drive.

The Mules came up short on two fourth-down tries in the final quarter as they tried to come back.

"We battled back and forth most of the fourth quarter," Bedford coach John Phillips said. "We had some chances, we just couldn't capitalize."

Bedford will take a 2-5 record into next week's rivalry game at Monroe (3-4).

"We have some things to build on," Phillips said. "We can build on what we did tonight. We played a solid game, but just came up a bit short. This was probably one of the better games we played all year."

Dexter 51, Monroe 0

DEXTER – Monroe was not able to get anything going on the road, dropping its third straight game to fall to 3-4 overall.

Dexter took a 37-0 lead into halftime and added on two more scores in the third quarter to put the game away.

"They were successful running the ball and had a pretty nice looking tight end who's a freshman (Holden Niemi). He's a pretty special player," Monroe coach Kyle Reed said. "They got him the ball a couple times in space and they were able to pull away from us."

Ty’Shawn Moore had 34 yards rushing to lead Monroe. Quarterback Aiden Newton completed three passes to three different receivers.

"We're a little banged up and fighting through some injuries," Reed said.

Riverview 42, Milan 6

RIVERVIEW – Riverview stayed tied for first place in the Huron League with a dominating victory.

The Pirates are 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the league. That is good for a tie with Airport on top of the standings.

William Gaskell V scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to produce the only points for Milan, which fell to 3-4 with its third straight loss. The Big Reds play Airport next week. Gaskell ran for 103 yards on 22 carries.

Union City 44, Summerfield 6

PETERSBURG – A 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Hayden Noland produced Summerfield’s only points of the night.

Mitchell Gomulinski led the offense with 57 yards rushing and paced the defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Jake Wadsworth added 11 tackles for the Bulldogs, who have dropped three straight after a 4-0 start.
