GARRETTSVILLE — Friday ended in heartbreak for the Southeast boys basketball team.

Tuesday was the exact opposite as the Pirates put Friday's overtime loss behind them with a convincing 79-57 victory at Garfield.

"It was just a big thing over the weekend," Southeast senior Garrett Sprutte said. "We got to stay strong mentally, make sure we get in the gym and just be here at practice on Monday and make sure we bounce back Tuesday."

Freshman Cohen Richardson got the Pirates (9-10) off to a blazing start, making his first five 3-pointers — all within the first five minutes and 15 seconds of the game.

Richardson finished with 25 points, draining 7 of his 12 shots from deep.

Sprutte scored 18 second-half points to lead all scorers with 27. Per usual, he was an unstoppable force driving to the basket, particularly in transition.

The Pirates defense also played a huge role, holding the G-Men (6-14) to a single field goal in the second quarter as Southeast finished the first half on an 18-0 run.

"We just needed to turn up the intensity," Richardson said. "We were playing kind of flat [in the first quarter], letting them do whatever they wanted."

Southeast coach Matt Dillon was quick to credit assistant Zeddie Pollock.

"Coach Pollock works on our defense every day at practice," Dillon said. "Coach Pollock is an invaluable member of this coaching staff, and that's why we're defending that way at that end of the floor. The kids love playing for Coach Pollock and they're really playing hard at that end."

Stay tuned for an upcoming feature on Richardson.
