MOGADORE — Wednesday's Senior Night victory didn't come easily for the Mogadore girls basketball team.

Why would it? Nothing has come easily for the Wildcats in this adversity-filled season.

Still, Mogadore shook off an ice-cold start to pick up a 37-33 Portage Trail Conference victory over visiting Southeast.

"Adversity is our mantra this year," Wildcats coach Jen Ritch said with a laugh. "We're used to it. It's sad. I don't like being used to it, but we are."

Mogadore senior Brook McIntyre, in her fourth game back from a broken fibula, shook off a 1-for-6 first half from the field to lead all scorers with 16 points. McIntyre's successful night included two 3-pointers as well as making all six of her fourth-quarter free throws to seal the win.

"She's a competitor," Ritch said. "You know she's going to fight back, even if she's having a rough game. She's still going to, even if she's not scoring or doing things, she's in the huddle saying, 'Let's do this.' She is and they just follow that energy."

Ari Tompkins made five of six from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning free throws with 2:58 remaining, as the junior finished with nine points.

In addition to connecting from the line, Mogadore (7-9, 2-4) won behind a frenetic press that helped force nine fourth-quarter turnovers.

"We have to play defense in order to have success," Ritch said. "There are four things we always talk about: defense, we have to win the rebounding battle, which I don't think we did tonight, we have to make bunnies — easy shots — and we have to make foul shots. If we don't do those four things, we can't win."

Southeast (7-8, 1-4) fell despite big performances from freshmen Jenna Canale (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Elliott Smallfield (eight points, two 3-pointers).
