From playing ice hockey on the boys' team to girls' lacrosse, this CB West duo flourishing

Yeah, sounds like ice hockey players.

"Both of them are gritty, physical and give you 100 percent all of the time," Kali Cook-Grisewood said. "They just never stop working and will do anything to help the team succeed."

Now, the catch is, Cook-Grisewood is not the ice hockey coach at Central Bucks West. She is the head girls' lacrosse coach.

However, the "both" she is talking about are seniors Abby Rogers and Isabella Carter. They are girls' lacrosse players and ice hockey players.

CB West seniors played boys' ice hockey and girls' lacrosse

In fact, Carter is the first girl to play a full season on the ice hockey team in school history and she did so for three years. Rogers played ice hockey for West for the past two seasons.

Despite the Bucks' success in lacrosse, both love being on the ice so much that they'll stay with the sport in college.

Rogers, who plans to study elementary education, is headed to Liberty University in Virginia while Carter is off to Penn State, where she will play on the women's club team.

"I'm going to play on the women's team at Liberty and am really excited about the opportunity," said Rogers, a lacrosse team captain.

"I thought about playing lacrosse, or maybe trying to play both in college, but that's really hard. It's going to be tough not playing lacrosse because it's something I've done for a long time and really enjoy playing."

CB West's Carter, Rogers had to adjust to boys' ice hockey

Rogers, who has played for the Little Flyers girls' team for the last five years, found she had to adjust a bit to the boys' game.

"With the boys, it's a completely different kind of game," Rogers said. "The physicality, at first, was a real shock and I had to adjust quickly. But you have to get used to it and just understand that's how it's played.

"I had never played that kind of a physical game and when I took my first hit, I really found out how big and fast the players you're playing against are. But it made me a better player and I'm glad I had the chance to play."

Like Rogers, Carter has been playing ice hockey since she can remember and has loved every minute of it.

"My dad played and I've been in a rink my entire life," said Carter, who won the Bucks Award in ice hockey after this season which is presented to the player that practices the hardest, does best in the classroom and exemplifies the term student-athlete.

"I like to play aggressively, and you have to think faster when you're playing hockey with the boys — that's just the way it is.

"When you have a 200-pound guy coming at you instead of a 120-pound girl, the physics matter, so you have to get used to it."

CB West pair will miss playing lacrosse

Like Rogers, Carter, who plans to major in animal science at Penn State, will miss lacrosse. Both have been on the varsity for four seasons and know their final season could end at any time with the PIAA District One Class 3A playoffs beginning Tuesday.

"Lacrosse has been good to me and if there's a chance to play in college somehow, I'd definitely try it," Carter said. "But ice hockey was my first love. I know that sounds very Hallmark, but there's just something about the game that I've always loved to play and be a part of.

"I'm really looking forward to going to Penn State for the academics. The campus is beautiful and the facilities are great, and also to have the chance to keep playing hockey."
