Pisgah's Chappell will coach Shrine Bowl team

May 5—Pisgah High School's head football coach, Brett Chappell, has been named to the North Carolina team coaching staff for the 2023 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

The annual all-star game — now in its 87th year — between the "Tar Heels" and the "Sandlappers" pits the best 44 players from North Carolina against the best 44 from South Carolina. The game is scheduled for Dec. 16, 2023, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

"I'm honored to be in it, that I was thought of well enough to be on the staff," Chappell said. "I'm excited to be able to coach some of the state's best."

Chappell joins Monroe's Johnny Sowell, A.C. Reynolds' Bryant Craig, Pinecrest's Nick Eddins, North Duplin's Hugh Martin, Page's Doug Robertson and North Hampton's George Privott. Sowell will serve as the N.C. team's head coach.

Wayne Farmer of Calhoun County was named head coach of the South Carolina squad. Joining Farmer as Belton-Honea Path's Russell Blackston, Gilbert's Chad Peaphart, Chester's Victor Floyd, Brookland Cayce's Reed (Rusty) Charpia, Hartsville's Carlisle Koonts and Sumter's James Breland.

Chappell said the teams are staffed with coaches who have been coaching for many years.

"They look at some different criteria — the success and stuff that you've had. I've seen some really good coaches that have coached and had great careers that never had a chance to be in the Shrine Bowl," he said.

Chappell said he's already had a chance to begin recruiting for the North Carolina team.

"I'm excited about getting to Dec. 16 down in South Carolina, going against some of their best and seeing what can happen," he said.
