PIAA wrestling live coverage Thursday: First day of action is wrapped up

The PIAA wrestling championships began Thursday morning and runs through Saturday at Hershey’s Giant Center.

Day 1 of competition is wrapped up. The preliminary, first-round and first-round consolation matches took Thursday for the boys, while the girls wrestled just the first round. A full schedule can be found here.

CB East's McCullough falters

Central Bucks East senior Reagan McCullough dropped a 5-2 decision to North Allegheny's Aiden Buggey in the first round of consolations at 215 pounds. The loss eliminated McCullough from the tournament.

Neshaminy's Ernazar Baiyshbekov advances

Neshaminy's Ernazar Baiyshbekov took an early lead on the way to a 12-4 major decision over Selinsgrove's Ethan Miller in his first-round consolation bout at 160 pounds. The win advanced Baiyshbekov to Friday's second round of consolations.

Pennridge's Gallagher keeps going

Pennridge's Ryan Gallagher outlasted Kennett's Mike Pepe 5-2 in the first round of consolations at 160 pounds to remain alive in the tournament. Up next for Gallagher will be Friday's second round of consolations.

Neshaminy's Beknazar Baiyshbekov falls

Neshaminy's Beknazar Baiyshbekov saw his tournament end when he dropped a 9-4 verdict to Hempfield's Kyle Deisley in the first round of consolations at 152 pounds.

H-H's Staub keep going

Hatboro-Horsham senior Chris Staub picked up a third-period pin in his first-round consolation match at 145 pounds to remain alive in the tournament. Up next for Staub will be Friday's second round of consolations.

Council Rock South's Brillhart falters

Council Rock South's Ben Brillhart was eliminated from the tournament after being pinned by Nazareth's Cade Campbell in the closing seconds of the third period in their 145-pound bout.

Pennridge's McBride advances

Pennridge's Quinn McBride earned a 4-2 win over Kennett's Zack Jaffe in the first round of consolations at 127 pounds to advance in the tournament. Up next for McBride will be Friday's second round of consolations.

Council Rock South's Bhatt bows out

Council Rock South's Ajay Bhatt saw his tournament come to a close with a 5-0 loss to Blake Boyer, of Kennett, in the first round of consolations.

Pennridge's Coffin keeps going

Pennridge's Cole Coffin notched an 8-0 win over Parkland's Blake Dergham to keep his medal hopes alive at 121 pounds. Up next for Coffin will be Friday's second round of consolations.

Council Rock North's Kane moves on

Council Rock North's Pierce Kane stayed alive in the tournament thanks to a 3-0 win over Red Lion's Jackson Orrell in the first round of 121-pound consolations Thursday night. The win moved Kane into Friday's second round of consolations while Orrell was eliminated.

Cathedral Prep’s Oler advances to Friday

Cathedral Prep's Keagan Oler defeated Luke Magnani, of Boiling Springs, 9-0 in a 127-pound consolation and advanced to Friday. Oler started the second period with a reversal then collected near-fall points.

Hickory’s Bishop, Scriven win within moments of each other

Brody Bishop took down Aidene Sczcesniuk of Coatesville to seal a 3-0 decision in the 121-pound consolation, while Elijah Scriven had a comfortable lead in his match 114. Not long after Bishop's win, Scriven beat Cumberland Valley’s Phil Montes 13-3. Both Hornets advance to Friday.

Spring Grove's Hershey loses in round of 16

Spring Grove's Michael Hershey will have to go through the consolation bracket to win a second state medal. The District 3 heavyweight champion lost 4-3 to Kennett's John Pardo in the round of 16. It was a brutal matchup for Hershey. Pardo won a third-place state medal last season while Hershey took seventh.

The Rockets senior was surprisingly called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the first period. It was unclear why. He gave up a takedown and, despite keeping it close, did not earn a takedown of his own. He nearly picked one up by the edge of the mat in the third period.

La Salle's Brennan advances

La Salle High senior Andrew Brennan edged Harrisburg's Kevin Brown 4-3 in his first-round bout at 285 pounds. The victory moved Brennan into Friday's quarterfinals.

Quakertown's Lachman roll

Quakertown senior Calvin Lachman piled up the points late en route to a 14-3 major decision over Holidaysburg's Wyatt Maines in his first-round bout at 285 pounds. The win moved Lachman into Friday's quarterfinals.

Central Bucks East's Collins falls

Central Bucks East senior Joe Collins hung with Southeast Regional champion Dean Bechtold most of the way before dropping a 9-5 decision at 285 pounds in his first-round bout. The loss dropped Collins into the consolation bracket.

Meadville’s Tidball finishes Thursday 1-1

Meadville 215-pounder Ty Tidball will start Friday’s session in the consolation bracket. He lost by fall to Jake Conroy of Ringgold after his preliminary victory over Pittston’s Brody Spindler.

Central York goes 2-1 on first day

It was a solid showing for the Panthers' senior trio Thursday. Eli Long won 5-0 over Downingtown West's Jordan Barry at 145 pounds. Carter Davis won 5-2 over Bethlehem Catholic's Charlie Scanlan. Both have reached the quarterfinals. Wyatt Dillon won his first match in the preliminaries but lost 8-0 to Hempfield Area's Eli Carr in the round of 16.

Pennridge's Hogan upended

Pennridge junior Talan Hogan battled all the way before dropping a 6-2 decision to Brian Heard of Abington Heights in his first-round bout at 172 pounds. The loss dropped Hogan into the consolation bracket.

CR South's Sadriddinov rolls

Council Rock South senior Bek Sadriddinov cruised to a 10-4 win over Conestoga Valley's Abdoul Akala in his first-round bout at 172 pounds. The win moved Sadriddinov into Friday's quarterfinals.

Pennridge's Gallagher falters

Pennridge senior Ryan Gallagher lost by fall to Wallenpaupack's Gunnar Myers in his first-round bout at 160 pounds. The loss dropped Gallagher into the consolation bracket.

CR South's Cole wins by pin

Council Rock South junior Gavin Cole built a big lead and then put Selinsgrove's Ethan Miller away with a pin in his first-round bout at 160 pounds. Cole, who notched the pin midway through the third period, advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.

Quakertown's Gaj notches fall

Quakertown junior Collin Gaj, a defending PIAA champion, dominated Austin Smith of Abington Heights deep into the match before recording a fall in the final 30 seconds in his first-round bout at 152 pounds. The win moved Gaj into Friday's quarterfinals.

Pennridge's Kuhns advances

Pennridge senior Sam Kuhns scored first on the way to a tight 4-3 win over West Allegheny's Nick Jones in his first-round bout at 152 pounds. Kuhns advances to Friday's quarterfinals with the win.

H-H's Staub falls

Hatboro-Horshame senior Chris Staub dropped an 8-4 verdict to Central Dauphin's Gavin Reynolds in his first-round bout at 145 pounds. The loss dropped Staub into the consolation bracket.

Quakertown's Carroll moves on

Quakertown junior Gavin Carroll took an early lead and was never threatened in a 6-2 win over Cole Gibbons of Mount Lebanon in his first-round bout at 145 pounds. The win moves Carroll into Friday's quarterfinals.

York Suburban senior advances

York Suburban's Tyler Adams faced an early challenge but won 7-2 over Avon Grove's Christian Ford in the first round at 133. The bout was tied 0-0 after the first period before Adams rallied for three takedowns. The Navy commit has reached the state quarters for the first time after missing last year. He can win his first with a win over Connellsville's Kai Vielma in the quarterfinals Friday.

Central Bucks West's Kelly advances

Central Bucks West junior Patrick Kelly used a second-period reversal on the way to a 4-2 win over Northern York's Rocco Fratelli in his first-round bout at 139 pounds. The win moved Kelly into Friday's quarterfinals.

Central Bucks West's Dennis edged in OT

Central Bucks West sophomore Chris Dennis lost in an ultimate tiebreaker (2-2) to Bethel Park's Mason Kernan in his first-round bout at 133 pounds. Kernan chose top in the tiebreaker and was able to hold Dennis down for the required 30 seconds to earn the win. The loss dropped Dennis into the first round of consolations.

Northeastern senior advances

Northeastern's Elijah Hewitt won a state match for the first time after going 0-2 last season. He won by major, 15-3, over Hickory’s Brody Bishop. He'll face Bethlehem Catholic's Keanu Dillard in the quarterfinals. Red Lion's Jackson Orrell lost his first match, 4-2, to Council Rock South's Luke Reitter.

Hickory’s Bishop drops opener, Slicker advances

Hickory 121-pounder Brody Bishop dropped a 15-3 major decision to Northeastern’s Elijah Hewitt in his tournament opener. Hornets teammate Brady Slicker, however, won his 127-pound Hershey debut via 6-4 decision over Bethlehem Catholic’s Ryder Campbell.

Cathedral Prep’s Oler drops opener

Cathedral Prep’s Keagan Oler and Lower Dauphin’s Cael Rossi needed overtime to decide their 127-pound first round bout. Each wrestler had a scoring opportunity from neutral in the extra period, but it was Rossi who finished a single-leg attempt to seal a 5-3 decision.

Pennridge's McBride falls to consolations

Pennridge sophomore Quinn McBride fell to Wilson West Lawn's McKaden Speece 15-3 in his first-round bout at 127 pounds. The loss dropped McBridge into the consolation bracket.

CR South's Reitter, CR North's Sement advance

Council Rock South senior Luke Reitter notched a 4-2 win over Red Land's Jackson Orrell in his first-round match at 121 pounds. The win moved Reitter into Friday's quarterfinals. Council Rock North junior Eren Sement, a two-time PIAA third-place finisher, thumped Altoona's Gavin Ciampoli 18-0. The technical fall came early in the third period to propel Sement into Friday's quarterfinals at 127 pounds.

Quakertown's Ziegler impresses

Quakertown senior Mason Ziegler, a PIAA runner-up a year ago, dispatched Central Dauphin's Luke Hitchcock by pin in two minutes, 57 seconds in his first-round bout at 121 pounds. The win moved Ziegler, a Lehigh recruit, into Friday's quarterfinals.

Hatboro-Horsham's Morrison rolls on

Hatboro-Horsham freshman Dom Morrison, the top-ranked wrestler in the state in Class 3A, cruised to a 7-1 win over Hempfield Area's Nico Kapusta in his first-round bout at 107 pounds. The win moved Morrison into Friday's quarterfinals.

Pennridge's Martinelli moves on

Pennridge junior Colby Martinelli built a big lead early and kept up the offense on the way to a 19-4 technical-fall win over Downingtown West's Chase Sigel in his first-round match at 114 pounds. The win moved Martinelli into Friday's quarterfinals.

CR South's Lenahan upended

Council Rock South senior Connor Lenahan dropped a 4-1 decision to Northampton's Gabriel Ballard in his first-round bout at 114 pounds. The loss dropped Lenahan into the consolation bracket.

D-10 wrestlers 0-2 in 114-pound first round

Hickory’s Elijah Scriven and Meadville’s Ben Fuller each dropped their first-round bout at 114. Fuller, who won a preliminary before meeting Butler’s Santino Sloboda, fell 12-0 in his second match of Thursday. Scriven, meanwhile, dropped a 4-3 decision to Cedar Cliff’s Kavin Muyleart despite a late reversal that brought him back into the match.

Central York's Dillon wins in the prelims

Central York’s Wyatt Dillon entered states with plenty of motivation after finishing third at the District 3 Class 3A tournament. And he got his tournament off to a strong start with a pin over Neshaminy's Beknazar Baiyshbekov in  the 152-pound preliminaries. He'll face Hempfield Area's Eli Carr in the round of 16 later Thursday evening. Dillon was the only YAIAA wrestler to win in the prelims. Red Lion 133-pounder Mason Harvey and New Oxford heavyweight Mason Smith both lost and fall to the consolation bracket.

CR North's Diaz falls in first round

Council Rock North senior Alexander Diaz battled all the way before dropping a 1-0 decision to Cedar Cliff's Aiden Herndon in his first-round bout at 107 pounds. The loss dropped Diaz into the consolation bracket.

CB East's Collins' cruises

Central Bucks East senior Joe Collins notched a late fall over Mount Lebanon's Ben Lloyd in his preliminary match at 285 pounds. Collins, who led 9-0 at the time of the fall, earned the pin with seven seconds left in the third period to move into the first round.

Central Bucks East's McCullough falls

Central Bucks East senior Reagan McCullough suffered a 12-1 major-decision loss in his preliminary bout against Franklin Regional's Juliano Marion at 215 pounds. The loss dropped McCullough into tonight's first round of consolations.

Tidball doubles Meadville’s preliminary win count

Meadville 215-pounder Ty Tidball moved the Bulldogs to 2-0 in the Class 3A preliminary around with his 8-1 victory over Pittston’s Brody Spindler. Tidball logged an early takedown but really took control of the match with a second-period cradle which logged him near-fall points.

Souderton's Lester wins by injury default

Souderton's Kole Lester advanced to the first round after winning his preliminary bout over Trinity's Rob Allison at 189 pounds. Lester trailed 4-2 late in the second period when Allison was injured and could not continue.

Pennridge's Hogan advances

Pennridge junior Talan Hogan rolled to a 12-2 major decision win over Holidaysburg's Mitchell Boronner in his preliminary bout at 172 pounds. The win moved Hogan into the first round later today.

Neshaminy duo drop preliminary bouts

Neshaminy senior Ernazar Baiyshbekov was pinned by Waynesburg Central's Brock Evans in his preliminary bout at 160 pounds. Neshaminy junior Beknazar Baiyshbekov fell to Central York's Wyatt Dillon by fall in his preliminary match at 152 pounds. The losses dropped both into tonight's first round of consolations.

Council Rock South's Bhatt, Brillhart both upended

Council Rock South senior Ajay Bhatt fell behind in the early going and suffered an 8-2 loss to Canon-McMillan's Ryder Joseph in his first-round bout at 139 pounds. The loss dropped Bhatt into tonight's first round of consolations.

Council Rock South junior Ben Brillhart couldn't get his offense going in a 3-0 loss to Trinity's Thomas Allison in his preliminary bout at 145 pounds. The loss dropped Brillhart into tonight's first round of consolations.

Quakertown's Williams wins

Quakertown senior Isaac Williams used a late reversal to earn an 8-7 win over Bangor's Carter Smith in his first-round bout at 127 pounds. The victory moved Williams into today's first round.

Central Bucks West's Dennis moves on

Central Bucks West sophomore Chris Dennis had little trouble with Whitehall's Trokon Kai as he picked up a 15-0 technical fall to advance into the first-round bracket later today. Dennis ended the match with back points with 41 seconds left in the third period.

Pennridge's Coffin falters

Pennridge senior Cole Coffin dropped an 11-2 major decision to Seneca Valley's Connor Smith in his first-round bout at 121 pounds. The loss dropped Coffin into tonight's first round of consolations.

Council Rock North's Kane falls

Council Rock North sophomore Pierce Kane dropped a 3-0 decision to Canon-McMillan's Collier Hartman in his first-round match at 121 pounds. The loss dropped him into tonight's first-round consolations.

Meadville’s Fuller wins preliminary

Two second-period takedowns powered a 5-3 preliminary victory for Meadville 114-pounder Ben Fuller. He took control against Phil Montes of Cumberland Valley in that decisive second stanza after a scoreless first.

Council Rock South's Lenahan moves on

Council Rock South senior Connor Lenahan dominated on top en route to a 2-0 win over Greater Latrobe's Leo Joseph in his first-round match at 114 pounds. Lenahan, who rode out Joseph the entire third period, moved into the first round later today.

Council Rock North's Diaz wins

Council Rock North senior Alex Diaz claimed his preliminary match with a 4-1 win over West Scranton's Connor Lagier at 107 pounds. The victory moved Diaz into the first round later today.

Souderton's Atkinson records fall

Souderton freshman Mackenna Atkinson pinned Esther Reed of Big Spring late in the first period in her first-round match at 235 pounds. The win moved Atkinson, who earned the fall at one minute, 58 seconds, into Friday's quarterfinals.

Quakertown's Fries edged

Quakertown senior Peyton Fries fell to Aja Jumper of Cumberland Valley 1-0 in her first-round bout at 235 pounds. The loss dropped Fries into Friday's first round of consolations.

Palisades' Snyder wins by pin

Palisades sophomore Bryce Snyder moved into the quarterfinals at 190 pounds with a pin over Jersey Shore's Isabella Gotschall in her first-round match at 190 pounds. Snyder notched the fall in two minutes, 44 seconds.

North Penn's Maxwell upended

North Penn sophomore Daniella Maxwell lost her first-round bout by fall to Bald Eagle Area's Grace Crestani in four minutes, 41 seconds. The loss dropped Maxwell into Friday's first round of consolations.

Quakertown' Hattala stays unbeaten

Quakertown sophomore Caroline Hattala needed just 21 seconds to pin Delaware Valley's Emily Smith in her first-round bout at 190 pounds. The win moved the unbeaten Hattala, now 26-0, into Friday's quarterfinals.

Hickory girls split first round matches

Hickory’s Avry Ryhal had an 8-0 lead by the end of the first period in her 155-pound match and, before second period’s end, had secured a pin of Bedford’s Camryn Steinbuch. Teammate Kailynn Adams dropped her 190-pound bout via second-period fall.

Bensalem's Krieger advances

Bensalem junior Maya Krieger moved on to Friday's quarterfinals with a 5-4 win over Cumberland Valley's Veronica Guise in her first-round bout at 170 pounds. Krieger used a late takedown and then was able to stay in control the rest of the way for the win.

Warren girls’ duo drops openers

Warren girls’ duo Kasey Kophazy (136 pounds) and Katie Seamens (148) each dropped their preliminary match by first-period fall.

Saegertown’s Mook drops 130-pound debut

Saegertown 130-pounder Kacie Mook saw an early lead slip away against Shannon Govern of Hamburg. Govern erased a 5-3 deficit before turning Mook and pinning her in 3:22.

ELCO's Trostle off to hot start

ELCO freshman Kylee Trostle gets off to a hot start at her first state championships with a pin over Central Bucks' Macayla Needham in the first round at 112. Trostle will face Bishop McCort's Lane Fordyce in the quarterfinals.

Greenville’s Kelly Enterline edged in 124-pound prelims

Greenville’s Kelly Enterline worked to a 6-6 draw with Isabella DuVall of Philipsburg-Osceola for nearly three periods. As the Greenville freshman tried to work a late pinning combination, however, DuVall escaped in the match’s waning seconds to claim a 7-6 decision.

Souderton's Husti-Luca impresses

Souderton junior Kayla Husti-Luca needed just over a minute to pin Wallenpaupack's Ariel Manning in her first-round bout at 130 pounds. The fall came at one minute, one second and propelled Husti-Luca into Friday's quarterfinals.

YAIAA wrestlers score early wins

YAIAA wrestlers got off to an impressive start at the first PIAA girls' wrestling championships. York Suburban freshman Alyisana Price-Ierley got an early pin over Canon-McMillan's Capri Chambers in the first round at 106 pounds. On the mat next to her, South Western senior Natalie Handy racked up a 17-0 tech fall over General McLane's Ashley Campbell. Handy has a difficult matchup against top seed Julia Horger of Conwell-Egan in the quarterfinals. If Handy and Price-Ierley both win in the quarterfinals they'll face each other in the semifinals. Price-Ierley beat Handy in the District 3 semifinals last week.

Abington's Clift defeated

Abington junior Gracie Clift was pinned in 25 seconds in her first-round match at 124 pounds. The loss dropped her into the first round of consolations on Friday.

Souderton senior Ramirez moves on

Souderton senior Giselle Ramirez dominated from the start en route to a 14-3 major decision win over Cumberland Valley's Cayci McKenna at 118 pounds. Ramirez nearly earned a fall at the buzzer in her win that moves her into Friday's quarterfinals.

D-10 produces two quarterfinalists at 112 pounds

Conneaut’s Daylee Watson led her preliminary match against Nevaeh Strouse of Selinsgrove, 7-2, when she pinned her at 4:30. Watson’s prior offense had come from two takedowns and a reversal.

Watson advances to Friday’s quarterfinals, where she’ll be joined by Emma Johnston of Hickory, who held on for a 5-3 decision over Wyoming West Valley’s Isabell Seip. Seip sought a turn for near-fall points as the match expired but Johnston wouldn’t budge.

Palisades' Witt roars

Unbeaten Savannah Witt of Palisades picked up a first-period fall over Cleona O'Brien of Hempfield in her first-round bout at 118 pounds. With the win, which came in one minute, 23 seconds, Witt improved to 28-0 and advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.

Saegertown’s Sample advances at 118

Leah Sample’s three near-fall points in the second period provided the difference in the Saegertown sophomore’s 4-2 victory over Wyoming West Valley’s Isabell Seip. She advances to Friday’s quarterfinals.

Central Bucks' Needham falls to Elco's Trostle

Central Bucks junior Macayla Needham lost by fall to ELCO's Kylee Trostle to fall into the consolation bracket at 112 pounds.

Conwell-Egan's Horger stays unbeaten

Conwell-Egan's unbeaten sophomore Julia Horger dispatched Hughesville freshman Julia Ritter with a first period pin her first-round match at 106 pounds. Horger, now 19-0, pinned Ritter in one minute, 41 seconds to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.

Pennsbury senior Abel upended

Pennsbury senior Anya Abel fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 12-5 loss to Kaylee Ebersole of Northern Bedford in her first-round match at 106 pounds. The loss dropped Abel into Friday's first round of consolations.

Souderton's Sarr rolls

Souderton sophomore Emily Sarr notched a second-period fall over State College's Anna Lackey at 106 pounds to move into Friday's quarterfinals. Sarr picked up the pin in three minutes, 29 seconds.

Neshaminy's Nesbitt soars

Unbeaten Neshaminy freshman Grace Nesbitt stayed that way by pinning Central Dauphin's Katherine Hollinger late in the first period at 100 pounds. The win moved Nesbitt into Friday's quarterfinals.

Bensalem's Hinkle advances

Bensalem sophomore Payton Hinkle, who was trailing by a point at the time, was able to turn and pin Hempfield's Harriett Mack in her first-round match at 100 pounds. With the win, Hinkle advances to Friday's quarterfinals.

Greenville’s Enterline logs D-10’s first win at inaugural PIAA girls’ tournament

District 10’s involvement in the first PIAA girls’ wrestling championships started with a pair of 106-pounders. Ashley Campbell of General McLane lost by technical fall to South Western’s Natalie Handy, but Greenville’s Madilyn Enterline advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals by pinning Clementine O’Brien of Hempfield. Enterline scored a quick takedown in the first period before locking up a cradle and securing the fall at 1:01.

District 10 action done for Class 2A

Fort LeBoeuf's Conner McChesney lost and General McLane's Ryan Dedrick won in Friday's last consolation first round matches that involved District 10 wrestlers.

McChesney's varsity career concluded when Easton Belfiore of Brookeville recorded a takedown as the final seconds concluded of his 6-5 victory in their 189-elimination match.

Dedrick advanced at 215 with a 5-1 decision over Quade Boden of West Perry. He'll face Dante Burns of Conwell-Egan in Friday's consolation second round.

Kimmy's varsity career concludes

Chance Kimmy's time as a General McLane wrestler ended with Thursday's consolation first round loss to Jenson Hockenberry-Folk. The West Perry junior blanked the Lancers' 152-pounder 5-0 in their elimination match.

Kimmy went 38-17 as a senior. He went 108-58 all-time for McLane and coach Ryan Cook.

Two out from Erie County

The varsity career for Fort LeBoeuf's Jojo Przbycyien ended in the consolation first round of the 160-pound bracket. Kaden Barnhart of River Valley defeated the Bison star 9-7.

Przybycien will graduate with 147 victories, the most ever in LeBoeuf's storied history in the sport.

Also eliminated in Friday's consolation first round was General McLane's Hudson Spires. Ethan Fetterolf of Penns Valley eliminated the junior 5-4.

Spires bowed out with a season record of 27-15.

Beck beats Ward in 145 elimination match

Cambridge Springs senior Brody Beck dominated Canton, Pennsylvania's Holden Ward for the third period of their 145-elimination match. Beck broke a 4-all tie with five points over the third period. The Blue Devil middleweight's 9-4 victory left him with a season record of 36-7.Beck will open Friday's competition with an elimination match against Gavin Badger, a Lancaster Catholic senior.

Faith Christian's Hontz still going

Faith Christian junior Chase Hontz kept his medal hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Mount Pleasant's Jamison Poklembo in the first round of consolations at 145 pounds. Hontz, a bronze medalist a year ago, used a reversal midway through the third period to secure the win and a place in Friday morning's second round of consolations.

North East's Hurd holds place in next consy round

North East's Cyrus Hurd was an easy winner in his consolation first-rounder. The junior dominated Notre Dame-Green Pond's Gavyn Kelton throughout his 19-5 major decision.Hurd's split of Thursday's matches left his season record at 44-5. His initial opponent for Friday's action at Hershey will be Parker Sentipal, a Burgettstown senior.

North East's Galloway gone at 121

Bryson Galloway's initial varsity wrestling season ended in the consolation first round of the tournament's 121 weight class.

Galloway, a North East senior, lost 12-6 to Brayden Pequignot of North Penn-Liberty. He bowed out with an overall mark of 31-16.

Saegertown's Beck, North East's Kowle through at 114

Two of the three District 10 wrestlers in the 114 consolation bracket advanced. The one who lost did so against a familiar foe.

Saegertown's Carter Beck eliminated Grove City's Tanner Hamilton 10-1 in their consolation first-rounder. Beck advanced to Friday's consolation action at 34-5.

He'll face Zane Crouse of District 3 Bishop McDevitt.

Also moving on was North East's Rocky Kowle. The sophomore for the Grapepickers prevailed 7-4 against Bentworth's Drake McClure.

Kowle remained alive at 34-13. His next opponent is Anthony Mucci, a Derry Area junior.

Chiesa wins all-District 10 elimination match

Sierra Chiesa's bid to become the first female to medal in a boys state tournament remained alive.

The Northwestern junior's quest came at the expense of another Erie County wrestler.

Chiesa, who led Hunter Chew 5-0 for most of their 107 consolation first-rounder, pinned the Harbor Creek sophomore with one second left in their match.

Chiesa, now 36-12, advanced to Friday's consolation second round against Montgomery's Manny Stoltzfus (42-8). She must win that match and then another to assure herself of the PIAA history she initially sought a year ago at the Giant Center.

Chew was eliminated with a season record of 33-13.

Conwell-Egan freshman moves on

Conwell-Egan freshman Colin Walther put on a strong showing to remain alive in the tournament as he posted a 7-0 win over Kruz McCusker of Sullivan County at 127 pounds. Up next for Walther will be Friday morning's second round of consolations. Conwell-Egan junior Jeff Spofford was eliminated from the tournament after a 2-0 loss to Landon Bainey of West Branch in the first round of consolations at 121 pounds.

Fort LeBoeuf heavyweight John Duran, with late back points against Wyomissing's Caleb Brewer, advanced to Friday's quarterfinals via a 3-2 decision.

Duran recorded his decisive move with 25 seconds left in regulation. He conceded an escape point to Brewer with six seconds left, but prevented his senior opponent from tying or winning the match.

Duran, a junior, improved to 39-10. He'll face Montoursville's Landon Morehart or Burgettstown's Joey Baronick.

Dropping into Friday's consolation second round was Greenville senior Joey Peterson, who went 1-1 for Thursday's session. His loss was a 24-second pin by Berks Catholic's Brody Kline. Peterson is now 27-10.

The consolation first round is scheduled to start at 12:45 p.m.

Faith Christian's Effendian wins big

Faith Christian sophomore Mark Effendian dominated from start to finish at 285 in a 16-1 technical fall victory over Central Clarion's Josh Beal. Effendian picked up a final takedown at the buzzer to account for the tech. fall. The win moves him into Friday's quarterfinals.

Conwell-Egan's Burns falls to defending state champ

Conwell-Egan senior Dante Burns dropped a 9-1 major decision to defending state champion Austin Johnson of Muncy in his first-round bout at 215 pounds. The loss dropped Burns into this afternoon's first round of consolations.

Faith Christian's Wagner falls

Faith Christian senior Cody Wagner was upended by Northwest Regional champ Carter Chamberlain 3-1 in his first-round match at 189 pounds. The loss dropped Wagner into this afternoon's first round of consolations.

Faith Christian's Singer soars

Faith Christian sophomore Jason Singer dispatched Bishop McCort's Jordan Butler in a little under two minutes to advance to Friday's quarterfinals at 215 pounds. Singer picked up the pin in 1:54.

4 from YAIAA heading to wrestlebacks

Four YAIAA wrestlers lost in the first round of the Class 2A tournament and will need to wrestle through the consolation bracket.

Delone Catholic freshman Gavin Green lost 7-5 to Mifflinburg's Ben Straub at 127. Bermudian Springs sophomore Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus lost 10-1 to Conneaut Area's Hunter Gould. Yacoviello-Andrus took third in the state at 127 pounds last season.

Biglerville senior Joey Ney was pinned by Bishop McCort's Melvin Miller at 152 pounds. And Delone Catholic freshman Caleb Tyler lost by major, 8-0, to Brookville's Gavin Hannah at 215.

District 10 duo defeated in 215 action

Greenville's Teague Calvin and General McLane's Ryan Dedrick dropped into the consolation bracket at 215. They lost on separate sides of that division's championship bracket.

Frazier star Rune Lawrence pinned Calvin 2 minutes, 31 seconds into their match. That left the junior for the Trojans with a 36-11 record for his consolation second-rounder come Friday.

Dedrick will return to action later this session. Somerset's Rowan Holmes pinned the senior for the Lancers in 1:29.

Dedrick (37-9) will face West Perry's Quad Boden in their elimination match.

Erie County on current quarterfinal roll

Erie County was denied a quarterfinal berth through the 152-pound division.

Now, thanks to Magnus Lloyd, they've advanced at least one wrestler in the last three completed weight classes.

Lloyd, a senior for General McLane, pinned West Perry's Tucker Seidel 2 minutes, 22 seconds into their 189 first-rounder. The former state junior gold medalist advanced to Friday's quarterfinals at 42-5.

Garrett Garcia will be Lloyd's next opponent. The Southern Columbia senior maintained his perfect record at 31-0 with a 12-2 major decision of Bentworth's Vitali Daniels.

Two more through at 172

Each of District 10's 172-pound wrestlers advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.

Notable from Erie County was Mason Savitz. The Corry junior improved to 38-7 this season with a 9-3 decision over Honesdale's Joey Giannetti.

Savitz will face Belle Vernon's Elijah Brown or Berks Catholic's Carmine Lenzi in the championship round of eight.

The bottom half of that same bracket saw Grove City's Hunter Hohman move on with a 16-0 technical fall of Trinity's Joey DeAngelo. The senior for the Eagles (42-4) required 4 minutes, 15 seconds for his early result.

Hohman will face Fort Cherry's Braedon Welsh or Northwestern Lehigh's Luke Fugazzotto early Friday.

Story continues for Girard's Buchanan at 160

Girard senior Story Buchanan became Erie County's first wrestler who advanced to Friday's championship quarterfinal round.

Buchanan, the lone YellowJacket at Hershey this weekend, made a first-period takedown and a second-period escape point hold up for a 3-2 decision against Daniel Haubert of Palisades. Haubert escaped from the bottom to open the third period, but couldn't record a go-ahead takedown over the rest of regulation.

Buchanan, now 37-5, moved on to face Hudson Ward. The Canton senior improved to 39-10 with a 5-2 victory vs. Chase Frameli of Jefferson Morgan.

Dropping into Friday's consolation first-round action are two of Buchanan's fellow county wrestlers, Hudson Spires of General McLane and Jojo Przybycien of Fort LeBoeuf.

Northern Lebanon's Wolford advances at 107

Northern Lebanon's Sam Wolford won his 107-pound first round match by tech fall, 15-0, over Montoursville's Aristotlis Bobotas. Wolford moves on to face Chestnut Ridge's Dominic Deputy in the quarterfinals. Deputy took state silver last season by losing to Wolford's teammante, Aaron Seidel, in the final. Wolford competed at 114 pounds last season but has dropped down one spot while Seidel has jumped two weights to 121.

Faith Christian's Weidemoyer on to quarterfinals

Faith Christian sophomore Cael Weidemoyer, a third-place PIAA finisher a year ago, blanked Kane's Reece Bechakas 5-0 in his first-round bout at 160 pounds. The victory advanced Weidemoyer into Friday's quarterfinals.

Faith Christian's Waters rolls

Faith Christian defending PIAA champion Adam Waters had little trouble in his first-round bout at 172 pounds as he notched a 17-1 technical fall over Valley's Charles Perkins in just under four minutes. The win moved Waters into Friday's quarterfinals.

Palisades' Haubert upended at 160

Palisades senior Daniel Haubert dropped a 3-2 decision to Girard's Story Buchanan in his first-round bout at 160 pounds. Haubert, who will now wrestle in this afternoon's first round of consolations, nearly had a takedown on the edge at the buzzer, but Buchanan was able to fight it off.

Two D-10 wrestlers through at 152

District 10 Mercer County wrestlers Caullin Summers and Cody Hamilton advanced into Friday's quarterfinals.

Sharpsville's Summers, in the top half of the bracket, pinned Halifax's Peter Ranck in 2 minutes, 58 seconds. He improved to 40-5 as a senior.

Warrior Run junior Cameron Milheim (46-2) will be Summers' next opponent.

Grove City's Hamilton, in the bottom half of that same bracket, recorded an 18-2 technical fall against Saucon Valley's Cole Hubert. The junior for the Eagles, now 44-2, accomplished that in 3:10.

Hamilton's Friday quarterfinal foe will be Penn Cambria's Trent Hoover or Line Mountain's Dalton Schadel.

Faith Christian's Stein advances

Faith Christian junior Max Stein dominated General McLane's Chance Kimmy from start to finish in a 7-0 first-round win at 152 pounds. The victory moved Stein into Friday's quarterfinals.

Littlestown's Mingee rallies for big win

Littlestown's Cameron Mingee earned the biggest win of his career in his final state tournament. The senior trailed for most of his first match but rallied for a 4-3 win over Burgettstown's Gavin Suica in the 139-pound first round. Mingee earned a takedown with 18 seconds remaining in the third period.

Split results at 145

Wyatt Lazzar, wearing a Commodore Perry singlet, advanced to the 145 championship quarterfinals.

Lazzar domianted Towanda's Riley Vanderpool en route to a 17-1 technical fall. The senior only required 3 minutes, 30 second to achieve the latest win in his season record of 29-3.

Lazzar will face Ryan Lawler of Bishop McDevitt in Friday's quarters. Lawler (41-6) also recorded a technical fall (17-2 in six minutes) against Belle Vernon's Kole Doppelheuer.

Not as fortunate was Brody Beck. The Saegertown senior was pinned 1:25 into his first-rounder against Warrior Run's Reagan Milheim.

Beck dropped into a consolation first-rounder later this session. At 35-7, he'll face Holden Ward of Canton, Pennsylvania.

Faith Christian's Hontz falls at buzzer

Faith Christian's Chase Hontz, a third-place finisher in Hershey a year ago, was upset by Derry Area freshman Mason Horwat 2-0 at 145 pounds in his first-round bout. Horwat picked up two back points at the buzzer to get the win. Up next for Hontz will be this afternoon's first round of consolations.

Two more into 139 quarters

Two District 10 wrestlers advanced in the top half of the 139 weight class.

Reynolds senior Chase Bell defeated Lewisburg's Landen Wagner 3-2. Bell (36-10) will face Faith Christian Academy sophomore Mason Wagner, also a 3-2 victor over Philipsburg-Osceola's Marcus Gable, in Friday's quarterfinals.

Below them are Sharpsville's Alex Rueberger and Bishop McCort's Bo Bassett.

Rueberger is now 40-9 as a senior thanks to his 5-2 decision against Line Mountain's Nolan Baumert. However, he'll be a massive underdog against Bassett, who improved to an incredible 53-0 with a 44-second pin of Bishop McDevitt's Easton Comp.

Bassett, only a sophomore, is already 71-0 as a varsity wrestler.

Two through at 133 for District 10

The 133-pound bracket is now District 10's most bountiful. Two of its four wrestlers advanced to Friday's championship quarterfinals.

They were Conneaut senior Hunter Gould thanks to his 10-1 major decision against Bermudian Springs' Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus, and Grove City sophomore Hudson Hohman, who pinned Montour's Anthony Orlandini in 2 minutes, 41 seconds.

Gould's Friday quarterfinal opponent will be Mason Gibson of powerhouse Bishop McCort. Hohman's next foe will be Quaker Valley's Jack Kazalas or Blue Ridge's Jackson Maby.Dropping into the 133 consolation bracket were General McLane's Clay Kimmy and North East's Cyrus Hurd.

Kimmy won't wrestle again until Friday's consolation second round. Hurd (44-5) returns this session against Gavyn Kelton of Notre Dame-Green Pond.

Northern Lebanon's Seidel get quick pin

Northern Lebanon's Aaron Seidel got off to a fast start in his quest for a PIAA three-peat. The junior pinned Central Valley's Antonio Boni in the first period (1:30) of the 121-pound first round. It was Seidel's first state match above the lightest weight class after winning titles at 106-107 the last two years.

Faith Christian's Botero moves on

Faith Christian's defending PIAA champion Gauge Botero picked up a workman-like 5-1 win over United's Josef Garshnick in his first-round bout at 121 pounds. Botero, who advanced to Friday's quarterfinals, used three second period back points to help pull away for the win.

Bagnell, Walther fall

Conwell-Egan senior Kevin Bagnell dropped a 1-0 decision to Cranberry's Dalton Wenner in his first-round bout at 114 pounds. The loss dropped Bagnell into this afternoon's first round of consolations.

Conwell-Egan freshman Colin Walther dropped a 5-3 overtime decision to fellow-freshman Anthony Barra of Bloomsburg in the opening round at 127 pounds. The loss dropped Walther into this afternoon's first round of consolations.

Conwell-Egan's Robson, Faith Christian's Mason Wagner both headed to quarterfinals

Conwell-Egan senior Charlie Robson recorded a first-period fall over North East's Cyrus Hurd in his first-round bout at 133. Robson put Hurd away at one minute, 49 seconds to advance to Friday's quarterfinals where he'll face Montgomery's undefeated Brandt Harer (51-0).

Faith Christian sophomore Mason Wagner used a second-period escape to help edge Philipsburg-Osceola's Marcus Gable in his first-round bout at 139 pounds. The win moved Wagner into Friday's quarterfinals.

Split results at 127

Reynolds advanced a second wrestler to Friday's championship quarterfinals.

It's Logan Stewart, a freshman who decisioned McGuffey's Lucas Barr 7-2 in their first-rounder. Stewart (41-7) will now face Anthony Barra (35-7), a freshman from Bloomsburg.

Not as fortunate was North East's Kyler See, who lost to Chris Vargo. The Bentworth star only needed 2 minutes, 43 seconds for a 15-0 technical fall of the sophomore for the Grapepickers.See's split of Thursday's state matches left his season record at 33-16. He awaits his consolation second round opponent in a match that will occur Friday.

Reynolds star Gill gets district's first quarterfinal berth

Louie Gill, in his final varsity tournament, began the meet with an easy victory in his 121 opener.The senior, who was a state champion for Hickory as a freshman, recorded a 15-0 technical fall in only 3 minutes, 1 second against Beth-Center's Mason Wright. The North Carolina State recruit improved to 48-5.

Gill will face Faith Christian Academy's Gauge Botero during Friday's championship quarterfinal round.

Not as fortunate in his first-rounder was Bryson Galloway. The North East freshman trailed 11-0 when he was pinned by Sullivan County's Colton Wade at the 5:25 mark.

Galloway (31-15) will return this session for a consolation first-rounder against Brayden Pequignot of North Penn-Liberty.

No quarterfinalists at 114

North East's Rocky Kowle and Saegertown's Carter Beck were eliminated from 114 title contention within seconds of each other.

Kowle recorded the initial takedown of his championship first-round vs. Easton Mull. It accounted as the only offense, though, for the sophomore from the Grapepickers.

Mull, a junior, ran off the match's remaining points for a 16-2 major decision. He advanced to the quarterfinals at 44-11.

Kowle (33-13) dropped into an elimination match later this session. He'll face Drake McClure of Bentworth (36-12).

Beck lost 9-6 to Caden Judice of Bald Eagle Area.

The junior for the Panthers, now 33-5, will face Grove City's Tanner Hamilton in an all-District 10 elimination match.

Hamilton lost during Friday's preliminary round.

All 107-pounders out of title contention

Reynolds' Angelo Lomonte, the last of District 10's three 107 wrestlers, lost his opener.

Freshman Jordan Manyette of Trinity recorded a minor upset with his 2-1 victory vs. the junior for the Raiders. Manyette was a preliminary round starter, while Lomonte was the Northwest Region's champion.

Lomonte (39-10) is done for the day. He awaits his opponent for Friday's consolation second round.

An unwanted all-District 10 match

The good news for District 10 is that two of its wrestlers will compete later this session. The bad news is it will be in the 107 consolation first round.

Northwestern sophomore Sierra Chiesa, who seeks to become the first female to medal in the all-boys portion of the tournament, lost her initial match to Burrell's Cameron Baker. Chiesa spent the better part of the third period trying to turn Baker from the top but was unsuccessful.Baker's 4-2 victory dropped Chiesa (35-12) into an elimination match against Harbor Creek's Hunter Chew.

Delone freshman gets first state win

Delone Catholic freshman Caleb Tyler wins his first state match with a 3-1 win over West Greene's Colin Whyte in the 215-pound preliminaries. He got a late takedown to break the tie and earn the win. Tyler will face Brookville's Gavin Hannah in the first round later this morning. Tyler is now 36-3 this season.

Conwell-Egan's Boyce wins by pin

Impressive Conwell-Egan freshman Thomas Boyce needed just 39 seconds to cradle and pin North Penn-Liberty's Bryce Pequignot in his first-round bout at 107 pounds. The win moved Boyce into Friday's quarterfinals.

Faith Christian's Bachmann rolls

Faith Christian's Joey Bachmann, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 107 pounds in both Class 2A and the nation, put on a takedown clinic in his 22-7 technical fall first-round win over Quaker Valley's Bruce Anderchak that took just over three minutes. Bachmann, now 35-0, moves into Friday's quarterfinals with the win.

District 10 done in preliminary round

Greenville heavyweight Joey Peterson, the last District 10 competitor in action during Thursday's initial championship round, decisioned Westmont Hilltop's Jonah McCoy 3-2.

Peterson will take a season record of 27-9 into his next match this session. It will be against Brody Kline, a Berks Catholic senior.

Kline (25-5) is bound for Franklin & Marshall College's wrestling program.

Calvin comes through at 215

Greenville's Teague Calvin, the first of Greenville's two upperweights in action during the preliminary round, decisioned West Perry's Quade Boden 9-2 at 215.

Calvin, a junior, advanced to a first-rounder later this session at 36-10. His opponent will be Frazier star Rune Lawrence, who's bracketed as the favorite to win the 215 division.

Lawrence, a senior, is 29-1 this season and 141-8 overall. The West Virginia University recruit seeks to become a rare four-time PIAA titlist.

Bison upperweight defeated late

The initial dramatic match for a District 10 wrestler involved Conner McChesney.

The Fort LeBoeuf senior found himself on the losing end of a 7-6 decision against Derry Area's Brady Brown at 189.

McChesney, son of Bison coach Shane McChesney, rallied to tie the match at 6-all with 19 seconds left in the third period. However, Brown (38-4) managed to escape from the bottom with seven seconds left.

McChesney dropped into this session's consolation first round at 22-5.

Elder Kimmy defeated at 152

General McLane's Chance Kimmy arrived at Hershey with 108 career victories.

Rudy Brown definitely made sure he wasn't the senior's 109th victim.

Brown, a Burgettstown senior, recorded a 15-0 technical fall with 1 minute, 5 seconds left in their 152 preliminary match. He advanced at 48-6, while Kimmy dropped into this session's consolation first round at 38-16.

Faith Christian's Cody Wagner wins in OT

Faith Christian's Cody Wagner notched a takedown with 15 seconds left in the first overtime period to score a 3-1 win over Northern Bedford's Eion Snyder in his preliminary bout at 189 pounds. Up next for Wagner will be a meeting against Clearfield's Carter Chamberlain in the first round later this morning.

Storm falls to consolation bracket

Bermudian Springs junior Carter Storm falls to Bentworth's Vitali Daniels in the Class 2A 189-pound preliminaries. Storm trailed 14-0 in the second period before getting pinned. Storm falls to the consolation bracket and has one more opportunity to keep his season alive later this afternoon. This is Storm's first appearance at the state tournament.

After a scoreless first period, Palisades senior Daniel Haubert built a lead in the second period, twice getting back points, on the way to an 8-0 win over Kaden Barnhart of River Valley in a preliminary bout at 160. Up next for Haubert will be Northwest Regional champ Story Buchanan in the first round later this morning.

Biglerville's Ney takes down Barletta

Biglerville’s Joey Ney gets the day started for YAIAA wrestlers with a pin over Western Wayne’s Tyler Barletta in 1:25 in the 152-pound preliminaries. He registered two takedowns before getting the pin. Ney moves on to face Bishop McCort’s Melvin Miller in the first round Thursday morning. It’s the second state tournament win of his career.

Kimmy comes through at 133

General McLane's Clay Kimmy dominated the third period of his 133 opener against Tyler Clark.

Kimmy, only a sophomore, recorded the last seven points of his 12-3 major decision over Clark, a Frazier senior. The middleweight for the Lancers improved to 34-18.

Kimmy's next opponent, later this session, is sophomore Camden Baum of District 3 Bishop McDevitt. Baum (45-2) didn't wrestle as a freshman.

District 10 wrestling rankings: Change at every weight after districts, regionals

North East's See has sight set on second win

District 10 has its first victorious wrestler. It's Kyle See of North East.

The sophomore, thanks to a dominant 10-0 third period, advanced in the 127-championship bracket with a 17-5 major decision vs. Liam Lawler, also a sophomore from District 3 Bishop McDevitt.

See improved to 33-15. However, his next opponent will be significantly tougher. It's Bentworth senior Chris Vargo, a three-time state medalist and 2023 finalist.

Vargo (38-2) has committed to Edinboro University, according to pa-wrestling.com.

Hamilton loses vs. fellow frosh

Keegan Barrick of Big Spring defeated Grove City's Tanner Hamilton 10-6 in an all-freshman match at 114.

Barrick recorded a late takedown to secure his preliminary round win. He advanced at 39-12, while Hamilton (34-12) dropped into Friday's consolation first round against an opponent to be determined.

Harbor Creek's Chew defeated

We have our first District 10 result.

It wasn't a good one at all for Hunter Chew. The Harbor Creek sophomore was shutout 13-0 at 107 by Halifax freshman Izaya Schickley.

Avoiding a fall on Schickley's final three-point near fall was the only positive for Chew, who dropped into Thursday's consolation first round at 33-12.
