Breakout athletes of 2013
- 1/11
Andrew Wiggins
Andrew Wiggins: The top-ranked player in the class of 2013, Wiggins (who is from Canada but attends a prep school in West Virginia) should explode wherever he lands for college and would likely be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft if he were eligible for it. Florida State and Kentucky appear to lead for his signature, but Kansas and North Carolina can't be counted out. - 2/11
Jurickson Profar
Jurickson Profar: Pegged as the top prospect in the minor leagues, the 19-year-old Profar belted a home run in his first major league at-bat. The question for the Texas Rangers is where will they insert him into the starting lineup. It's looking like he'll switch from shortstop to second, pushing Ian Kinsler over to first.Getty Images - 3/11
Marcus Mariota
Marcus Mariota: The "Bryce Harper" of this year's list, Mariota is a player you may have heard of but haven't taken notice of yet. Overshadowed by another fabulous freshman (Johnny Manziel), Mariota threw 30 touchdown passes vs. just six interceptions in his first year at Oregon. He should be a Heisman frontrunner going into the 2013 college football season.Getty Images - 4/11
Davonte' Neal
Davonte' Neal: This may seem like an odd choice because as a freshman Neal accounted for one catch for minus-5 yards and 44 yards as a punt returner who was instructed to fair catch the ball primarily by the staff. However, Neal was a top-20 receiver coming out of high school and Notre Dame has no true slot receivers returning to a national title contending team. Look for Neal to be the breakout offensive player for the Irish next season. - 5/11
Dylan Bundy
Dylan Bundy: Picked fourth overall in the 2011 major league draft, Bundy throws four pitches, all with command. He just turned 20 and may not start the season in the Baltimore Orioles rotation. But the right-hander, who's been described as a more compact Roger Clemens, will be there by season's end.Getty Images - 6/11
Andrew and Aaron Harrison
Andrew and Aaron Harrison: The twin brothers from Houston rank among the top five high school basketball players in the country. Aaron, a point guard, and Andrew, a shooting guard, are not a novelty act and will get plenty of chances to shine next season at Kentucky. - 7/11
Jahlil Okafor
Jahlil Okafor: Jabari Parker made this list a year ago, and rightfully so as he is the No. 3 player in the class of 2013. But Okafor, a 6-foot-10 junior at Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young and Parker's high school teammate, is just as worthy as the top player in the class of 2014. - 8/11
Chris Black
Chris Black: Prior to this season, there was more buzz at Alabama about Black than there was about Amari Cooper. But an injured shoulder put Black out for the year. Black will be a tremendous complement to Cooper, who will obviously get a ton of attention next season. But could Black have a better year than Cooper did in his breakout season as a freshman? - 9/11
Aaron Burbridge
Aaron Burbridge: The Big Ten's best receiver next season could very well be Michigan State's Burbridge. With 26 catches for 342 yards and one touchdown, it might be hard to see how he's going to bust out. However, Burbridge emerged as a starter mid season and has tremendous potential to be a double-digit touchdown guy in 2013.Getty Images - 10/11
Malik Pope
Malik Pope: The 6-foot-8 junior from Sacramento isn't a big name on the national radar, but the five-star talent is getting ready to break out. The No. 9 player in the class of 2014, Pope has the wing span, athleticism and scoring ability to be a big-time player. - 11/11
Adolphus Washington
Adolphus Washington: One of two defensive ends are going to break out next season for Urban Meyer's defense and Washington appears to be the more likely candidate.
