Phillipsburg baseball’s Dylan Wayne awarded for 11-hit, 7-RBI surge

Phillipsburg High School’s baseball team has been a big surprise this season, winning the Skyland Conference Valley Division title and advancing to the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament final.

Junior third baseman Dylan Wayne is one of the reasons.

Wayne went 11-for-15 with seven RBIs over the last five games, leading a division-clinching win over Delaware Valley and a HWST semifinal win over No. 2 seed Sparta on Saturday

He was voted the MyCentralJersey.com Readers’ Choice Baseball Player of the Week in an online poll.

Wayne, who hits third in the order, has been a starter since his freshman year. He has helped the Liners rise from 8-19 his freshman year to 11-16 last season, to 16-7.

Pburg, the No. 6 seed in the HWST, is scheduled to play No. 5 North Hunterdon on Friday for the title.

Wayne went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base in the Liners’ 10-9 tournament semifinal win at Sparta.

“Dylan has started for us since he was a freshman, but this year he has been a true leader for us,” said Liners coach Mike Ciavarella. “He takes his game very seriously and does not overlook the little things. He is so fundamental and has a great baseball IQ. This season he’s been fully healthy and has saved us a ton of runs by playing tremendous defense, as well as being a mainstay in the middle of our lineup.”

He is currently hitting a team-best .407 and also leads the team in hits and is third in RBIs.
