Phelan's Maya 'Maggie May' Hernandez wins 125-pound title at USA Boxing National Championships
Maya Hernandez’s dream is to compete inside a boxing ring in Paris at the 2024 Summer Games.
Hernandez inched a step closer to making the dream of representing the United States at the Olympics a reality.
The 16-year-old boxer from Phelan picked up the fourth national title of her amateur boxing career at the USA Boxing National Championships in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Competing in the 125-pound youth division, Hernandez beat Elise Soto, of New Jersey, by unanimous decision at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

All five judges scored the three-round bout 30-27 in her favor.
Hernandez isn’t much of a talker and didn’t have many words to say in the post-fight interview, but had a huge smile on her face and said it felt “good” to pull off the victory.
Hernandez was the No. 2 seed in the bracket and received a first-round bye. In the semifinals Friday, she beat Erica Sepulveda, of Texas, to reach the championship match.
Hernandez, who is known by those close to her as Maggie May, is trained by her father at Oak Hills Boxing Club.
