PFF names Rasul Douglas a potential Giants target
When NFL free agency begins in roughly a week’s time, the New York Giants will need to cast a wide net in order to shore up many of their weaknesses.
First and foremost, the Giants must add some playmakers on offense. They also need some offensive line depth, a backup running back, an edge rusher and a quality cornerback to pair with Pro Bowler James Bradberry.
Pro Football Focus believes that one potential option at the cornerback position is Rasul Douglas, who spent the 2020 season as a member of the Carolina Panthers.
The Giants ran a heavy dose of zone coverage during the 2020 season, and they’ll likely be looking for players who can have success in similar schemes moving forward. . . [Douglas has] the kind of length at cornerback that would be welcomed in New York’s defense.
Douglas is coming off a serviceable year starting outside for the Carolina Panthers in 2020 — a campaign that netted him a 60.3 grade in coverage. Douglas had two solid seasons prior to that in Philadelphia before a down 2019 year, and he could serve as the Giants’ CB2 on a relatively cheap deal in free agency.
The 25-year-old Douglas was a third-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent the first three seasons of his career battling in the NFC East before a one-year pitstop in Carolina.
In 60 career games (29 starts), Douglas has recorded 180 tackles (10 for a loss), one QB hit, 34 passes defensed and five interceptions. He finished with a 60.3 overall grade a season ago and recorded a career-high grade of 72.5 in 2018.
Ideally, the Giants would like to stop the revolving door at CB2, but would Douglas really be that guy? While the Giants’ defensive scheme may fit his style of play, his grades weren’t that much better than Isaac Yiadom (56.8) in 2020.
