Pete Alonso remains among MLB's top power bats

Fresh off a stint on the injured list, NBC Sports EDGE's D.J. Short explains why Pete Alonso should be able to return to his typical power form for the Mets and fantasy managers.

DJ SHORT: Mets first baseman Pete Alonso recently served a stint on the injured list due to a right hand sprain. But it hasn't taken him long to show that he's feeling a lot better. Alonso homered and knocked in four runs in his return. Now, he was in a 5 for 38 slide at the plate after originally injuring his hand. So the time off was a big thing for him.

Coming off a historic rookie season in 2019, Alonso had somewhat of an underwhelming year on the surface in 2020. But he was still on pace for 30 homers and 100 RBIs over a full 162-game season. In other words, he was mostly fine.

At a time we're seeing a dip in power for some players, you aren't going to have to worry about that with Alonso. He's in the top tier in all of the key indicators for power, including barrel percentage and hard hit percentage. His average batted ball distance is among the league leaders as well. He hits the ball hard. He hits it far.

Alonso might not be a batting average standout. But if healthy, he should be right there among the game's top power hitters once again.
