Pensacola-area H.S. Roundup: Gulf Breeze, Washington, Navarre continue stretch of solid play

Gulf Breeze 3, Pensacola Catholic 0: The Dolphins took the first of two matches this season against the Crusaders with a road sweep.

Set scores with 25-18, 25-12 and 25-12. Stats were unavailable.

After picking up its four-straight win, Gulf Breeze (13-2) plays 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mosley. Pensacola Catholic (3-14) aims to snap a four-game skid at 6 p.m. Monday at home against Rocky Bayou Christian.

The Dolphins and Crusaders will play once more on Oct. 12 from Gulf Breeze.

Booker T. Washington 3, Pine Forest 0: The Wildcats had no trouble earning their third consecutive victory following a road sweep of the Eagles.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-4 and 25-8.

Booker T. Washington (8-8) looks to get over the .500 mark when it hosts Tate at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Pine Forest (0-6) plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Escambia.

Baker 3, Pace 1: The Patriots suffered their third defeat in a row, two of which came against the Gators. The latest setback was a four-set road loss.

Pace won the opening set 25-14, but dropped tight sets the rest of the way by the scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23 in favor of Baker. Stats were unavailable.

The Patriots (11-7) look to rebound at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Crestview.

Boys Golf

Pensacola Catholic 154, Gulf Breeze 162, West Florida 164: The Crusaders were responsible for three top-five finishers en route to an eight-shot team victory from Tiger Point Golf Club.

Leading the way for Catholic were junior Wyatt Hart and senior Evan Covington. Each player put up a nine-hole score of 37 to finish tied for second. Fellow Crusader Hudson Mitchell was one stroke behind his teammates as the junior placed tied for fourth with Dolphins junior Clark Norris.

Those four players all trailed Bentley Van Pelt at the end of the round. The Jaguars senior finished on top of the leaderboard with a 36. Van Pelt bogeyed the second hole before returning to par with a birdie on the par-5 eighth.

Pace 147, Tate 157, Navarre 199, Milton 223: Highlighted by the play of Troyce Perkins, the Patriots cruised to a 10-shot victory during a four-team meet from the Stonebrook Golf Club.

Perkins started his nine-hole round immediately with a birdie on the par-4 first hole before earning another at the par-1 eighth. The junior finished with a 34, good for a one-shot win over fellow Pace junior Ian Jackson.

Aggies senior Jack Wallace, freshman senior Baylor Touchstone and Patriots senior Braden Touchstone each put up a 37 to finish tied for tied.

Swimming and Diving

Multi-Team meet: The Booker T. Washington boys team along with the West Florida girls team reasserted their dominance during a four-team meet at the Washington Aquatic Center.

Perfect through all 12 events, the Lady Jaguars breezed to victory after collecting 432 points, 146 clear of the Lady Wildcats, who placed second. Roles were reversed on the boys side as the Wildcats won 11 of 12 events en route to 469 points. West Florida was second with 288 points.

West Florida 3, Daphne (Ala.) 2: After dropping the third and fourth sets, the Jaguars rallied to take a five-set victory over the Jaguars. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 11-25, 23-25 and 15-8.

Improving its record to 11-4, West Florida received a number of contributions. Lilly Hatch had a Jaguars-best seven kills while Jaden Gentry and Sophie Pan added six apiece. Gentry posted team-highs in aces (4) and digs (12) while Pan paced the team in total blocks (8). Lastly, Avery Varias added 24 assists and 11 digs.

West Florida will host a quad-match on Saturday morning.

Choctaw 3, Navarre 2: Wednesday night’s match from Navarre was as tightly contested as it gets. However, the host Raiders were on the wrong side of a result against the Indians.

Set scores were 25-27, 28-26, 23-25, 27-29 and 15-13 in favor of Choctaw.

Surprising 2,000 assists for her career, Julia Irmen had 42 assists and 10 digs in the loss. She was one of four players to dig out at least 10 balls, as Addison Danforth (26), Amanda Dodson (15) and Savannah Briley (10) were impactful on the defensive end. Danforth also led the hosts from the service line with five aces while Katelyn Weller had a team-high three total blocks.

Kaitlyn Montgomery and Layla Prochazka posted 12 and 11 kills, respectively for Navarre. Meanwhile, Bailey Gable notched a team-high 18 kills for the Indians.

The Raiders head east for a tournament on Saturday in Neptune Beach.

Boys Golf

Booker T. Washington 164, Escambia 178: The Wildcats had the top-two scores en route to victory over the Gators from the Osceola Municipal Golf Course.

Sammy Tucker led the way for Booker T. Washington. The senior posted a 1-over-par 36, good for a two-shot victory over junior teammate Jack Floyd.

Escambia senior Reid Shiver and junior teammate Brighton Collins each shot a 39 to finish tied for third.

Tuesday

Gulf Breeze 3, Niceville 0: The Dolphins extended their winning streak to three matches with a home victory over the Eagles.

Booker T. Washington 3, Pensacola 0: The Wildcats won for the third time in four matches after capturing a home sweep over the Tigers.

Booker T. Washington (7-8) will look for its third straight win at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pine Forest. Dropping four of its last five matches, Pensacola (7-5) plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Milton.

Milton 3, Central 1: After losing the first set, the Panthers reeled off the next three to take down the Jaguars on the road.

Milton (7-6) plays host to Jay at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Central (7-9) plays West Florida Baptist Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday at Milton.

Navarre 3, Pensacola Catholic 0: Routing the Crusaders in the opening set, the Raiders took care of business in the following frames to claim a home triumph.

Navarres (11-5) aims for its third straight win when it hosts Choctaw at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Pensacola Catholic (3-13) suffered its third consecutive defeat.

Jay 3, Excel (Ala.) 0: Following a competitive first set, the Royals breezed the rest of the way in a three-set home victory against the Panthers.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-9 and 25-11. Stats were unavailable.

Jay improved its record to 8-2.

Tate 3, Arnold 0: The Aggies have won back-to-back games against capturing a home win against the Marlins.

Northview 3, L.E.A.D. Academy 0: Following a close opening set, the Chiefs cruised the rest of the way to collect a road win against the Lions.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-9 and 25-12. Stats were unavailable for Northview (7-3), who won its third straight match. Macy Schepper had six total blocks and three aces while Emma Carlson chipped in 17 digs for L.E.A.D. Academy (0-11).

The Chiefs play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home against Blacksher.

Girls Golf

FCA Classic: An area trio finished tied for second place during the FCA High School Golf Classic from the A.C. Read Golf Course.

Pensacola’s Gabrielle Hultstrand, West Florida’s Abby Vernier and Pensacola Catholic’s Islay Benoit along with South Walton’s Lily Martin were deadlocked near the top of the leaderboard after each player recorded an 18-hole score of 73. Each player was two shots off the lead as Niceville’s Gracie Grant earned medalist honors after shooting a 71.

South Walton won the team portion of the event as it posted a low overall mark of 307. Niceville (330) was second while Pensacola Catholic (342), Choctaw (346) and Gulf Breeze (377) rounded out the top five.

Monday

Boys Golf

FCA High School Golf Classic: An excellent back-nine propelled Gulf Breeze’s Mark Piver to victory at the FCA High School Golf Classic from the A.C. Read Golf Course.

The Dolphins junior topped the leaderboard of a 20-team field by shooting a four-under-par 68. He was the only player to produce a sub-70 score. West Florida senior Bentley Van Pelt, Pace senior Braden Duvall and Pensacola Catholic junior Hudson Mitchell each were two strokes off the lead to finish in a three-way tie for second.

Week 4 Football Roundup: Escambia cruise in district opener while Pine Forest falls, Jay remains perfect

Piver alternated birdies and bogeys from the second hole to the fifth hole before closing out the front nine with a string of pars. However, the 10th hole is when he began to catch fire, birdieing four of the next five holes. He finished the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 18th.

Pace collected the overall win as its top-four players recorded a 76 or below to total a team score of 293, four shots ahead of second-place Pensacola Catholic. Judah Talley (72), Easton Viator (75) and Troy Perkins (76) contributed to the Patriots’ efforts while Evan Covington (72), Wyatt Hart (76) and Mac Gilmer (79) did the same for the Crusaders.

Gulf Breeze (315), Niceville (327) and West Florida (328) rounded out the top-five teams.

Volleyball

West Florida 3, Pine Forest 0: The Jaguars reached the 10-win mark after cruising to a road win against the Eagles. Set scores were 25-8, 25-10 and 25-13.

West Florida scored 18 of its 75 points from the service line, led by four aces from Avery Varias. The junior setter also had 13 assists. Fellow juniors Jaden Gentry and Kayla Anderson posted team-highs with seven kills and three total blocks, respectively. Anna Douglas had nine digs to lead the visitors, who improved their record to 10-4 this season.

Stats were unavailable for Pine Forest (0-5), who plays at 6 p.m. Thursday as host to Booker T. Washington. The Jaguars aim for their fourth straight win at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Daphne (Ala.).

Northview 3, Escambia 2: The Chiefs protected home court with a comeback victory over the Gators. Set scores were 13-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-12 and 15-10.
