Patriots jump significantly in ESPN power rankings, following win over Lions
The New England Patriots had a 29-0 shutout victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon and moved up eight spots in ESPN’s playoff rankings as a result.
Previously, the Patriots were ranked at the 27th spot. However, the new rankings had them move all the way up to the 19th spot. New England is looking to get into a bit of a groove, following their victory over the Lions. They face a tough Cleveland Browns team next, with a surging rookie quarterback in Bailey Zappe under center.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss evaluated the Patriots’ playoff chances for his portion of the power rankings. Let’s just say the Patriots are projected to have a steep climb. They have a 12.7% chance to make the playoffs and a 0.5% chance to win their division. However, there is one key component of their defense that may help them get to the playoffs, per Reiss.
“The Patriots are minus-2 in turnover differential, which is rare territory for them. This season they have 10 turnovers in five games. And it wasn’t a coincidence that the Patriots won the turnover battle Sunday against the Lions and played their best overall game of the season. This will be the first key to New England potentially getting itself in the playoff hunt in an increasingly tougher AFC East — learning how not to lose before it can win.”
The Patriots will have a chance to continue their strong defensive play against a Browns team that is heavily reliant on the run game. There is little doubt that the Patriots have an uphill battle, despite their recent success.
