Patriots announce QB Mac Jones has a back injury

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will not be available to the media on Sunday due to a back injury sustained in Sunday’s 20-7 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Boston Globe beat writer Jim McBride reported the news after the game.

The Patriots struggled to provide much resistance along the offensive front later in the game, and Jones took some hard shots while trying to deliver throws from the pocket.

It was an ugly game overall for New England.

When plays needed to be made, there was never a go-to guy for Jones, outside of wideout Jakobi Meyers. That isn’t to say the second-year quarterback didn’t miss a few throws, including a deep pass to Nelson Agholor late in the fourth quarter that probably would have went for six points.

The hope is that the injury to Jones isn’t anything significant that might cause him to miss time. Backup Brian Hoyer would obviously be the next man up, if it came to that, with rookie Bailey Zappe waiting in the wings.

It’s a tough way to begin the season for the Patriots, who have the Pittsburgh Steelers and their vaunted defense next on the schedule.
