Patriots 2023 NFL Draft picks are set after NFL awards compensatory picks

After the NFL doled out compensatory picks for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft Thursday evening, the New England Patriots draft order is officially set.
The Patriots were awarded a 4th-round draft pick, 135 overall, as a result of losing cornerback J.C. Jackson to the Los Angeles Chargers and a sixth-rounder, 210 overall, for the loss of Ted Karras to the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2022 offseason.
The NFL awards compensatory picks in the draft based on a formula that accounts for snap counts, yearly salary and postseason awards of departing free agents. A 2020 addition now also rewards teams that develop minority candidates that are eventually hired away for head coaching or front office positions. Picks are limited to the third round or below.

Several analysts predicted Brandon Bolden’s two-year, $2.8 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders may net the team an additional compensatory pick but the running back’s 66 rushing yards in 2022 evidently weren’t enough to factor into the compensation formula.
Since the NFL’s creation of free agency in 1994, the Patriots have received 48 compensatory picks, the fourth-most across the league. The most notable of which was a sixth-round selection in the 2000 Draft that netted the Patriots a certain quarterback from Michigan.
The 2023 NFL Draft will be held on April 27-April 29 in Kansas City.
