Pampa football overcomes multiple deficits to win eighth straight against Borger

BORGER — That ladies and gentlemen is why they call it a rivalry game. Anything can happen.

After falling behind two touchdowns and only gaining four yards in the opening quarter, the Pampa Harvesters stormed back to take the lead against Borger Friday night only to fall behind by 12 with 4:11 to go.

When the timer hit zero, Pampa was the winner for the eighth straight year, 34-33.

"Our kids are resilient," Pampa head coach Cody Robinson said. "We've shown a whole lot of grit all year long and had a lot of injuries early. ...Coaches and players all had an opportunity to drop that game late, but we just kept on competing because that's what Harvesters do."

It was a tale of two quarters in the first half as Borger (3-3) was in control of the opening quarter. KJ Jennings put the Bulldogs on the board first with a one-yard TD plunge before finding Bracin McCarty for a 49-yard TD bomb. That made it 14-0 Borger in the opening quarter while Pampa (2-4) managed four yards of total offense.

The script flipped in the second as Jarren Hill stepped in at QB and orchestrated three scoring drives, including two scoring runs by himself and a 54-yarder by Makai Boyce. That gave Pampa a 21-14 halftime edge.

The Bulldogs, though, wound up leading 33-21 with 4:11 to go as the game seemed over after Tyler Brooks' 32-yard fumble recovery with 7:05 left

But Pampa rallied again.

Pampa converted three third and longs culminating with an 11-yard scoring strike from Brant Hill to Jose Alonso to cut the deficit to five with 4:10 left. Pampa attempted an onside kick and recovered, but was ruled offside and had to redo the kick. The Harvesters recovered the second attempt, marched down the field and Boyce punched it in from a yard out to give them a 34-33 edge with 2:40 to go. The defense did the rest to get the win.

"The kids played hard the entire game," Borger head coach Dane Hamrick said. "I'm really proud of that effort and we made some big plays. We just had some crucial mistakes by coaches and players at the end of the game."
