Packers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell voices displeasure on social media: 'Not playing through injuries anymore'

Green Bay Packers fans have been vocal in expressing their displeasure about the team's defense on social media over the last week and specifically at coordinator Joe Barry.

One of the Packers' team leaders has now taken to social media as well to express some apparent displeasure that will likely raise some eyebrows about his intention.

"Not going out my way anymore and I’m not playing through injuries anymore cause when (expletive) goes wrong they always use it against you," Packers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell tweeted Tuesday morning. "I’m treating everyone accordingly and giving them the same energy they giving me. Focus on yourself and your mental 59 you owe it to yourself."

The Packers defense, led by coordinator Joe Barry, has come under fire the last two games following two losses to nearly fall out of playoff contention.

The unit failed to sack third-string New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito in Week 14 and let him have a career-high 71 rushing yards in a 24-22 loss. Then Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers torched the Packers' defense on Sunday in a 34-20 win. Mayfield became the first opposing quarterback to ever have a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field. He completed nearly 80% of his passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

LaFleur remains committed to Barry as coordinator, saying he's looking for solutions to communication issues.

De'Vondre Campbell injuries in 2023, got beat repeatedly vs. Buccaneers

Campbell mentioned injuries in his tweet. Has he been banged up this season?

Campbell has missed four of the team's 14 games with various injuries but has played in the last three and wasn't on the team's injury report heading into Sunday's game. The last game he missed due to injury (neck) was the Packers' Thanksgiving Day contest against the Detroit Lions.

Campbell and the Packers defense on Sunday got beat throughout the game by Mayfield, who made it look easy time and time again with several explosive plays.

One of those came came in the fourth quarter with Campbell the victim. The Buccaneers faced a 3rd-and-4 from their own 48-yard and leading 27-20. Mayfield then zipped a pass past Campbell to wide receiver David Moore at the first down marker. Campbell and cornerback Keisean Nixon then both dove to make the tackle but they each missed and Moore raced down field for a 52-yard touchdown.

That was the dagger. It was the Buccaneers' fourth straight scoring drive and third straight second-half TD drive.

Earlier in the half, he also couldn't catch up to Mayfield's 26-yard touchdown pass to Rachaad White with Nixon getting beat in coverage over the middle. That score gave the Buccaneers a 20-10 lead.

Campbell's best game in 2023 was the team’s 24-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 29 when he recorded 14 tackles, including 10 solo and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

That was his first game back after missing the previous three (Sept. 29 vs. the Lions, Oct. 9 vs. the Las Vegas Raiders and Oct. 22 vs. the Denver Broncos) with an ankle injury.

De'Vondre Campbell is a former All-Pro with a five-year contract

For the season, Campbell has 67 tackles (42 solo and 25 assisted) to go with 4.5 tackles for a loss. He's on pace for his lowest number of tackles since his rookie season.

Campbell, 31, is in the top 10 in tackles since being a fourth-round pick out of Minnesota in 2016. He spent the first four years with the Atlanta Falcons and then one year with the Arizona Cardinals. Campbell joined the Packers as a free agent before the 2021 season and flourished immediately.

His 146 tackles in 2021 were fourth most in the NFL and a personal career-high. That production earned him his first All-Pro recognition of his career as well as a new five-year contract totaling $50 million.

However, his numbers have dipped significantly in the past two years as injuries have forced him to miss games for the first time since his rookie season. He played in 13 of the team's 17 games last season and was third in total tackles with 96 (56 solo).
