Oxford QB Lucas Lambert does it all as Pirates romp over David Prouty

OXFORD — When the Oxford High football team dominates on the gridiron, chances are the Pirates are coming off a good week of practice, stimulating workout sessions riddled with old-fashioned game preparation. Add in the fun factor and the team's support system, and one can see how, and why, Oxford clicks.

During Saturday's game with David Prouty, the Pirates, with a week of solid practices in the rearview mirror, rolled up a 27-point lead by intermission in a 34-0 victory over David Prouty at Massey Memorial Field.

"On our way off the field, I expressed to the kids how important everything is during the week," Oxford coach Jeffrey Clarkson said. "We got a lot accomplished this week, and we were ready to play this game. Things went well for us in this game, and we were able to get the win. Most importantly, it was a real team win."

The Pirates (2-0) were jump-started by versatile senior quarterback Lucas Lambert, who was dominant all game. Lambert's stat line included four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing. He connected on all four of his extra-point kicks. Lambert was also in the mix defensively, deflecting several passes.

Lambert was at his best in the second quarter, scoring two TDs while the Pirates expanded a 7-0 advantage to 27-0 over the Panthers (0-2).

Oxford's first TD of the second period came when junior Jordan DeLeon broke free for a 5-yard score. However, the Pirates couldn't score on the 2-point conversion attempt. DeLeon caught a 30-yard pass from Lambert earlier in the drive, putting the hosts deep into Panther territory.

After a defensive stop, Lambert struck again, uncorking a 28-yard TD toss to senior Brett Morgan on the first play from scrimmage. He then booted the extra point.

Lambert scored the Pirates' third TD of the quarter on a 4-yard scamper. He followed with the extra-point kick. Earlier, Lambert bagged a first down with a 25-yard rush.

Lambert finished 6 of 10 passing for 145 yards and rushed six times for 60 yards. Lambert unabashedly expressed his strong feelings for his teammates, a hard-working group of athletes who can be described in unique, but positive ways.

"Our whole offense is a bunch of dogs — they can run anybody down, they can block anyone," Lambert said. "All our backers and receivers? Dogs. Jordan DeLeon, dog, Jadan Morales, dog. All these guys can do just about everything. Great teammates, great guys to play with."

"I also thought our coach drew up a great game plan, and we were able to run with that, and we were able to score a bunch of points," Lambert added. "Our defense played great and they're a bunch of dogs, too."

Lambert added that he just loves being out there on the field with his teammates and will do anything that he is asked to do.

DeLeon was impressive throughout, doing whatever the coaching staff asked.

"Like Lucas and coach said, we had a great week of practice and a very good game plan," DeLeon said. "The offensive line was amazing and gave Lucas a lot of time. With all that time, Lucas was able to throw some dimes to me and all the other receivers. All we got to do is go after it and catch it."

DeLeon knows what he's talking about. He caught a 23-yard TD toss from Lambert to start the third quarter. The TD, DeLeon's second, capped a four-play, 67-yard drive.

"Now we go back to work and get ready for Uxbridge, which will be a big test for us," DeLeon added. "We're getting a little better each week. This was a good one, better than Week 1 (a dramatic six-point victory over Lunenburg). Each week is fun. We're always getting better and look forward to Uxbridge."

"The kids are doing great — they're having fun," Clarkson said. "But we have to continue to work. Uxbridge is a big one. We'll be ready. One game at a time."
