Other Sports: WHS soccer teams split, cheer squad fifth and dance team 10th at Brandon

WATERTOWN — Watertown High School's girls tennis team kicked off homecoming week by posting wins over Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Roosevelt in a triangular at Highland Park on Tuesday.

The Arrows (12-2 on the season) topped Harrisburg 8-1 and Roosevelt 9-0.

"It turned out to be a great day after a rain delay," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink. "We had a lot of good singles and doubles matches against a Harrisburg team coach by Lori (Foltz) Splett, one of the best girls tennis players to come out of Watertown. You never know how things are going to go on homecoming week, so I was very happy with how the team played today.

Watertown plays Roncalli and Rapid City Central on Saturday at Aberdeen before returning home to host Mitchell at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19 and Roncalli at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21.

BRANDON — Watertown High School's boys and girls soccer teams split Eastern South Dakota Conference matches against Brandon Valley on Tuesday.

The Arrows won the boys' match 2-1 and the Lynx won 3-0 in the girls' match.

Watertown's boys (5-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the ESD), scored on an own goal and on a header by Riley Fischer. Skylar Stanton assisted on Fischer's goal and goalie Owen Muller made nine saves.

"We were down 1-0 at halftime. We were too quiet not aggressive enough, not together and a little standoffish," said Watertown boys head coach Jesse Hauck. "We made some adjustments in the second half, changed formations and told the boys to just be aggressive and put pressure on them the whole second half. "

The Arrow girls (who fell to 2-7-1 overall and 2-4 in the ESD), received 12 saves from goalkeeper Madison Enstad. Watertown made 15 shots, nine on goal.

The Arrow teams host Sioux Falls Washington on Saturday at Allen Mitchell Field, girls at 11 a.m. and boys at 1 p.m.

Competitive Cheer-Dance

BRANDON — A fifth-place finish by the competitive cheer squad topped the performance of Watertown High School's spirit squads on Tuesday in the Brandon Valley Invitational.

Watertown's dance team placed 10th out of 14 teams.

Sioux Falls Jefferson won the 13-team cheer division with a score of 279.0. Harrisburg was second at 275.5, followed by Sioux Valley at 258.5, O'Gorman 258.0, Watertown 245.0, Brookings 240.0, Brandon Valley 225.5, Mitchell 216.5, SF Washington 210.5, Yankton 188.5, Huron 187.0, SF Roosevelt 184.0 and Platte-Geddes 144.5.

"I'm so proud of the Arrows' performance tonight," said WHS cheer coach Malory Hoffmann. "We had to make some small changes to the routine due to an injury at Monday's practice. Even with the changes, all our stunts hit, they had energy and zero deductions."

Brandon Valley won grand-champion honors in dance with a 273.5 score, followed by Dakota Valley (268.25), Sioux Falls Washington (260.75), Harrisburg (252.75), Yankton (248.5), O'Gorman (247.5), SF Roosevelt (240.5), Aberdeen Central (226.25), SF Jefferson (224.75), Watertown, 215.75; Mitchell, 213.25; Brookings, 211.25; Huron, 210.75; Platte-Geddes, 207.75).

Watertown took ninth in hip hop (217.5) and pom (214.9).

"We changed out routines quite a bit from the last competition to add more difficulty so we had a few more mistakes than usual," said WHS dance coach Carolyn Fraher. "I still think the girls gave a great and entertaining performance.

Cross Country

SIOUX FALLS — Payton Brown of Milbank won the boys' 5,000-meter race during the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invitational cross country run on Tuesday at Yankton Trail Park.

Brown topped a group of 77 runners, winning the race 15 minutes and 46.25 seconds. Teammate James Batchelor was fifth (16:46.18) for the Bulldogs.

In the girls' 5,000, which included 70 runners, Ellie Maddox of Sioux Falls Christian won in 18:07.4. Ashlynn Batchelor of Milbank was fourth (19:10.22) and teammate Bianca Berry 20th (21:01.74).

Sioux Falls Christian swept the team titles. Milbank was fourth in the boys division and sixth in the girls division.

Canby-Minneota Cross Country

CANBY, Minn. — Canby-Minnesota cruised to team titles in both divisions in its home invitational on Tuesday.

The Lancers had the top six runners and won the girls division with a score of 15. Canby-Minneota also won the boys division with a score of 25.

Braelyn Merritt won the girls' 5,000-meter run in 20 minutes and 44 seconds for C-M, followed by teammates Claire Stoks (21:00), Mya Pesek (21:38), Jordyn Jostock (22:26), Nohemi Diaz (22:37.38) and Ava Danielson (22:37.86). Taylor Ourada was ninth in 23:09.

Logan Roelofs of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton won the boys' 5,000 in 17:12, followed by Canby-Minneota runners Zach Ourada (17:35), Kolton Duis (18:02) and Blake Giese (18:06). Tallen Merritt took eighth (18:43) an Sam Skorczewski 10th (19:23) for C-M.

Boys Golf

Winner Invite

WINNER — Dakota Munger of Chamberlain shot a 2-under 70 to win medalist honors by eight shots in the Winner Boys Golf Invite on Tuesday at the Winner Country Club.

Karson Keiser of Winner was second with a 78 and Sandler Wiekamp of Chamberlain third with a 79.

Mobridge-Pollock's golfers competed, including Brady Longbrake, who tied for 13th with a 95. William Blankartz shot 97, Jarett Amdahl 104, Jacob Zomes 108, Bryce Meyer 116 and Marques Beier 121.

Redfield Invite

REDFIELD — Finn Anderson of Aberdeen Roncalli and Watertown's junior varsity captured titles Tuesday in the Redfield Invitational at the Fisher Grove Country Club.

Anderson won a two-hole playoff over Watertown's Brody Torgerson to win medalist honors. Both golfers shot 79s. Brevin Fliehs of Groton Area and Jonathan DeBoer of Milbank each shot 80s; followed Evan Meester of Watertown jv and Maverick Nelson and Boden Schiller of Sioux Valley with 81s; and Curtis Sneden and Max Stemwedel of Watertown's jv and Owen Fisher of Milbank with 82s.

Watertown jv shot 324 to win the team title by six shots over Sioux Valley. Milbank shot 338, Groton Area 340, Redfield 367, Aberdeen Central jv 397 and Sisseton 416.
