OSU fans beats cancer he called 'Michigan'

The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is a big deal in both states, but one young Buckeyes fan recently took it to a very happy extreme.

Grant Reed, a 12-year-old from Bellville, Ohio, called his brain tumor "Michigan," and his family happily reported recently that he "beat Michigan."

"We've beaten Michigan for the short term, but like any rival, there's a chance it can come back," Grant's father, Troy Reed, told NBC4i.com, after his son's final chemotherapy treatment at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

According to multiple media reports, Troy Reed and his wife, Denise, met in the 1990s while playing for the Ohio State University Marching Band. The family remains fans of the Buckeyes, and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer paid a visit to Grant Reed in the hospital last December.

Word of the boy's battle reached Michigan coach Brady Hoke, who told SIkids.com, "Grant's story is inspirational and shows how special this great rivalry is to so many people. Our team breaks each meeting with 'Beat Ohio,' and I think we can all agree this is one circumstance where it's acceptable to say 'Beat Michigan.'

"Now, what we hope and pray for is that Grant never has to battle 'Michigan' again."
