OSSAA announces tentative 2023-24 ADM list; Piedmont among schools set to change classes

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has released tentative average daily membership numbers for the 2023-24 school year.

Average daily membership, or ADM, is the statistic the OSSAA uses to group high schools into classifications for activities. It measures the average number of students attending a specific school each day.

These numbers will not yet impact sports such as football that already have districts for the 2023-24 school year, but they will be used to set football districts for the following two years.

It’s also important to note that one school could fall into different classifications in different sports.

This happens because not every school plays every sport, and according to the OSSAA’s Rule 14, private schools can move up based on postseason success.

Additionally, the number of teams per classification can vary across different sports. The ADM list places schools in a general order from largest to smallest so the OSSAA can classify them on a sport-by-sport basis.

If the tentative numbers are accurate, then notable moves would include:

● Piedmont jumping from Class 5A to Class 6A

● Lawton Eisenhower jumping from Class 5A to Class 6A

● Tulsa Booker T. Washington dropping from Class 6A to Class 5A

● Midwest City dropping from Class 6A to Class 5A (Note: Midwest City is already competing in Class 5A football because of the way districts are designed, but this move would impact sports such as basketball, too.)

Here is a general breakdown of the classifications for basketball and any other sport that groups teams in this standard order:

6A - Largest 32 schools

5A - Next 32 largest schools

4A - Next 64 largest schools

3A - Next 64 largest schools

2A - Next 64 largest schools

A - Next 96 largest schools

B - All remaining schools
