Oklahoma State football vs. Texas in Big 12 Championship Game: Time, TV & scouting report

STILLWATER — While it looked like the Oklahoma State-Texas football series was over for the time being, it turns out they’ll see each other one more time as members of the Big 12.

The 20th-ranked Cowboys won their way into the Big 12 Championship Game with a 40-34 double-overtime victory over BYU on Saturday, while seventh-ranked Texas claimed the No. 1 seed with a one-loss regular season.

That means OSU (9-3, 7-2 Big 12) will serve as the visitor when the teams meet for the Big 12 title at 11 a.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, televised by ABC.

For Texas, it’s the first appearance in the title game since 2018, while the Cowboys’ lone trip to the game was in 2021.

Here’s a look at what you need to know about the game:

Scouting Texas

Record: 11-1 (8-1 Big 12)

Best player: T’Vondre Sweat is one of the best defensive tackles in the country as one of 10 players — and two defensive players — on the semifinalist list for the Walter Camp Award for national player of the year. The 6-foot-4, 362-pound super-senior has 40 tackles with 8.0 for loss.

The case for Texas: The Longhorns have the best scoring defense (18.2 points per game) and the third-best scoring offense (33.1) in the Big 12. Quarterback Quinn Ewers is second in the league in passing yards per game (279.2) and has the fewest interceptions (4) among quarterbacks with at least 250 pass attempts. But the biggest concerns for OSU is Sweat and the Horn run defense. Joined by tackle Byron Murphy II, linebacker Jaylan Ford and others, the Texas defensive front is a level above anything OSU has faced this season, ranking as the third-best rush defense in the country at 85.0 yards per game.

The case for OSU: Since finally getting over the hump in 2010, the Cowboys have controlled the series, which is set to end after this season with Texas heading to the SEC. OSU has won the last two meetings, six of the last eight and nine of the last 13. But that means little in JerryWorld with a Big 12 title on the line. The Cowboys have to use their balance on offense, with the nation’s leading running back in Ollie Gordon II and a passing attack that is averaging about 280 yards per game in Big 12 play.
